Oh, a K. Always tough because the only currently inhabited K-town I know in New Mexico is Kirtland, but I think it's been used. So I have to consult my handy-dandy favorite ghost-town resource, ghosttowns.com. First came up with one that must really be a ghost, because even the page came up blank.

But how about Kelly, New Mexico. If you've ever driven out to the VLA near Socorro, then you probably drove through quaint Magdalena. Off to your left as you travel west through Magdalena is a mountain, and Kelly appears to have been either up on that mountain or just on the other side to the south. What's surprising is that nearly 3000 people lived there at one time. (That's three times larger than Angel Fire!)

Oh, and H could be for Hillsboro, New Mexico. It's an almost-a-ghosttown since a small number of souls still live there, but it's gold mining days are done with. Lots of photographers go there, though!

We love Hillsboro - great lunch spot on the back road to Silver City.

How about "Old Horse Springs" New Mexico? - a wide spot in the road on Hwy 12 west of Socorro... Near the great Plains of St. Augustine.

;-)

Old Horse Springs! Cool!

And speaking of nearby Socorro, how about Socorro itself! It's an often-overlooked gem!

Ok, another K. Not a lot of active ones in NM now, but there's Kingston, a mining town whose population managed around 1200 at its height. As a note of distinction, the town sported one church -- and 22 saloons.

So I guess we could use A to name Alamo, New Mexico. Alamo is a Navajo community, indeed, the largest community in the little known Alamo Navajo Indian Reservation, which is well south of the main reservation in Socorro County.

Another A! Ok, you may remember from a year ago or so that I posted about Agua Fria. That's Agua Fria, New Mexico. No, not the one down by Santa Fe, but the one up here, just down the street from our house.

The goofy part is that (our) Agua Fria is a ghost town that hasn't existed for a long, long time. The whole place was built of wood, and wood doesn't hold well in our tough winters. Poof, no more Agua Fria.

H-o-w-e-v-e-r, the new map crew that came in with the new state administration a few years ago decided that our Agua Fria does indeed exist, so they added it to the state's new New Mexico maps. Soooo, in spite of the fact that there's absolutely nothing there except mountain meadow and some prairie dogs, there is an Agua Fria on the map.

Well, almost the end of the story. In current day Angel Fire, there are two gravel roads somewhat close to the location of old Agua Fria. And Angel Fire village named the one road Agua, and the other Fria.

Alexandria Bay, NY in the heart of the 1000 Islands is perfect for that quick trip to paradise.
Located on NY Rt. 12 just east of the northern end of I-81, A-Bay boasts amazing scenery, perfect campgrounds, well-tended resorts, and restaurants for every taste and budget. Take a boat tour of the islands and see the playground of industrial barons of years gone by, including two for real castles! While in the area, visit sister villages Clayton and Cape Vincent. Take the 1000 Islands Bridge to Canada and shop at some of the most exclusive shops in North America in Historic Kingston, Ontario. There's something for everyone in the family in summer in A-Bay and the 1000 Islands!

For Y, we could add Yeso, New Mexico. Yeso is mostly a ghost town, though a few stranglers are said to be sticking around. The town is located kind of in the middle of not a whole lot in ranching country between Fort Sumner and Vaughn on Highway 60. If you're into ruins photography, though, it'd be worth a visit!

Ottawa, Ontario is the capital city of Canada and only 1 hour inland from the NY border. If you wanted one word to describe the city, it would be "accessible". Ottawa is not only easy to visit from the US, but easy to see once you are there. There are nearby provincial parks and a clean Municipal Campground Just off HWY 417 on the west end of the city. See Ottawa Tourism Official Site for Tourist information, and Camping info here: Ottawa Municipal Campground - Home

How about Anthony, New Mexico! Anthony is a true-blue border town. New Mexico and Texas, that is. Part of it is on the NM side, and part on the Texas side. The Winter IBT was held there several years ago, I think, but I don't know if it was properly in NM or Texas.

Hey, let's not let this thing die. Here's Yah-ta-hey, NM. Yah-ta-hey is a Navajo greeting, though the Wikipedia article indicates, well, an interesting etymology. The town is located north of Gallup at the turn-off where you turn to head for Window Rock, AZ (capitol of the Navajo reservation).

Now comes the interesting part. The next in line can use a destination that begins with Y (from Yah-ta-hey), but the person is also welcome to use a destination that begins with I because Yah-ta-hey is the English version of the Navajo term, Tʼáá Bííchʼį́įdii. How's THAT for giving people lots of choice!

Not a town or city, but Yippee! We're going to camp and eat at Tail O' The Pup near Lake Placid, NY, where you'll find the best Northern NY BBQ, Lobsters, and Clam Bake!
No trip the the Adirondacks is complete without a stop at Tail 'O The Pup!
http://tailofthepupbbq.com/index.html

that leaves us with a P which should be a whole lot better than those recent Y's!

Oh, and a P is easy! Pajarito, New Mexico, where I grew up on a dairy! Hardly of mention now, but Pajarito ("little bird") received first mention around 1650 and was on the El Camino Real. Somewhat later, Pajarito became home of the Hubbell family, which ran several trading posts in the southwest, including the Hubbell Trading Post (now a National Historic Site run by the NPS, I believe).

Orleans Island, Québec, ( L'Île d'Orléans ) Canada is a beautiful island in the majestic St. Lawrence river near Québec City. Both the Island and Old Québec are lovely in summer, and easily accessed by superhighway from anywhere the Northeastern US. Here you will see buildings dating to the very earliest settlement of the continent! Glorious camping opportunities abound along the St. Lawrence River.

Davenport, IA

Davenport is one of the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA; Bettendorf, IA; Moline, IL; and Rock Island). The Figge Art Museum in the restored historic downtown area is a very interesting destination. The Putnam Museum and IMAX Theatre is another interesting destination in Davenport.
