We made into our site around 2:00 pm today. Rain almost gone, hopefully we will see some sunshine soon. I don’ t know if we will make it to midnite or not, drove in the rain most of the trip.
Love to all
Everyone have a safe trip!
Tomorrow is a new day and year!

Greetings Canopenians, and welcome to the 2018 Canopener!

Judging by the activity on the Canopener Facebook page and Canopener 2018 Airforums thread, the rally is in full swing and fun is running wide open. What started out as a 3 day rally is now at least a week for almost half of the folks who have signed up and shown up. In the true spirit of Canopenians, it appears there has been many impromptu gatherings and perusing’s of the park. As in the past, so many first timers are volunteering for helping and hosting. For those of you who do, many thanks from all who attend!
Hopefully everyone who wanted to attend this year’s Canopener was able to snag a site. What a challenging year it has been. The parks sites all got booked, what seemed to be by March, then late this summer the park canceled 20 sites for maintenance. What!!! Then in November they added the sites back, but not to those who got canceled. This made for what Michael Cagle (AWCHIEF) calls the silly season to be really silly this year. Adding the sites back, plus those who had to cancel, has the effect of new folks getting sites and many folks switching sites. Just all part of the Canopener!
Behind the scenes this year, those who help put on the Canopener have been working on making the Canopener even better. One of the things we are most excited about is we have applied to the WBCCI Executive committee and have been granted approval to make the 2018 and 2019 Canopeners a joint National rally between Airforums members and the Southeastern Camping Unit of the WBCCI. Now, if you expect big changes in the way the Canopener is going to be run, that isn’t going to happen any time soon. As always, anyone who wants to participate in the Canopener and has an Airstream or maybe wants to have one someday is welcome! A lot of suggestions have come in over the last couple of years, such as: Since we are always full, should we move the rally to a venue that has more sites? Can we get tents for activities here at Topsail? Maybe charge a rally fee? All of these things involve taxes and contracts, which the WBCCI can provide support for. You leaders who are stepping up, talk among yourselves and get feedback from anyone attending about what the Canopener should be in the future.
For the Canopener 2018, we have extended the dates from 12-31-2017 to 1-7-2018. We are setting the dates for the 2019 Canopener to January 3-6 2019 with early arrivals 12-31-2018. This should give the working folks a head start on getting vacation approval with some advanced notice.
On a personal note, Annette and I wish you all safe travels and a happy new year. She will be arriving Tuesday late afternoon, and unfortunately, I will not make this years Canopener due to getting radiation for prostate cancer. This will be Annette’s first solo tow but she has pulled these trailers at least 20,000 miles I figure. If you are on the road and see a total of 56 feet of white truck and silver trailer headed down the road, just wink your headlights at her!!
Enjoy the Canopener and see you down the road,

Joe & Annette

Howie E , say it isn’t so!!! It just won’t be Canopener without you two. You both will be so missed, and I will personally miss Miss Braith’s bundt pound cake! I hope you are both well and hope to see you both down the road! Love to you both,

wow!

hey Joe.
there are a lot of us here that have been through similar times. they are not crash landings , just rough landings. you get through it. just get good help and listen to the doctors. Sometimes they are right!
As far as Canopener goes it will continue to evolve within the confines of the original mandate to be a simple gathering of like minded Airstreamers. Pretty simple stuff. No meetings. No votes and no heavy topics. Just where is the party and who is bringing the boards! Simple and easy. We sure as hell don't gather here for the weather! So let the evolution continue and the core Canopeners will provide the appropriate stewardship to keep it on course.
Annette you just follow the bugs on your grill and if you need any help along the way just ask. There will be a convey sent out to help!
Lot of love to you both,
Pete and Judy

It may be chilly but on a positive note there is little chance of rain and no snow in the forecast for the rally.

Good afternoon! Deesnestwa (Diane and Jill) have to cancel for the festivities. We've been working on a renovation since late October trying to get Bobbie Lou ready for her inaugural trip. Alas, we're not ready and neither is she - she is minus a full galley, a sofa, etc. etc. So we will just have to plan on Canopener 2019.

Please take us off the list for Chili : (

I just deleted our reservation - Site #125 is now open to the 8th.

We're pretty bummed as we had hoped to meet everyone and get more ideas for our "new to us" AS.

We"re pretty confident tho that Kate & Kim and Pat & Linda are representing St. Augustine well.

Toodles,

Jill and Di

Canopener 2018 Schedule
So here goes with the LAST PRINT of the Officially unofficial rally schedule of the CanOpener 2018

And of course, feel free to cheer or heckle your favorite players! (we'll also be looking for volunteer judges/scorers for each pair of players.
Please note there will be no space for vehicle parking as we’ll be eating and playing on the parking lot!

Saturday, January 6th

WHAT: The All Aluminum All The Time Open House
WHEN: 2:00p.m. -4:00p.m. WHERE: Wherever you see aluminum, an open door and a friendly face! *If you have artisan wares, jewelry, food items, etc... to sell, this would be the time to set out your display ON YOUR OWN CAMPSITE ONLY.

Additional Information And Suggestions, mostly suggestions:
Hints for a happy camper time at CanOpener:
1) Get out of your trailer, walk around and meet your fellow CanOpenians! Don't let a little cold weather keep you pent up
2) Participate in as many or as little of the activities you want!
3) If you see a lit fire ring, walk up, introduce yourself and join the party!
**4) Remember this is a very large gathering so be flexible and know that all activities are always Weather Dependent.
5) Smile and be thankful you own an Airstream and are a part of the most awesome traveling community on the planet!

A friendly reminder, we won't be printing hard copies of the maps or of the "supposed schedule/guidelines of events". If you want either of these fine documents you can print your own or download them off the facebook Canopener page.
See you soon,
Annette

We'll miss you Joe. Hope everything goes well and we'll see you at a rally before long, maybe Farm Life?

Annette, if you need anything, we are in 123. If you don't need anything we are in 123.

OK - all you hardy, remaining Canoperians: I'm in search of all the musically inclined not ready for prime time Aluminotes (prior experience and newbies). If you can join us this week in creating musical noise, please either post here and/or send me a private msg so I can gauge the interest level. Let me know what instrument(s) you brought and the type(s) of music you'd like to play (specific song titles encouraged). I come bearing a guitar, fiddle, harmonica, ukulele, and an old scratchy voice to add to the mix; and I love to try to play Americana music to include a renewed interest in Crosby, Stills, & Nash. We had a blast last year and I'm hoping we'll have even more fun this year! Let me know soon, please - I hope to get some time in the clubhouse to practice/jam in some warmer surroundings than the amphitheater.
Cheers and Happy New Year!

Question

Okay... I thought I was going to have to retract my offer to take the cornhole set... the friend that has the full size one, took it with him and he is not back until the week after...

So I made one and ordered a set of gold and black corn bags... can't do the coat of sealer/stain on the board because of the cold weather and afraid it will not dry fast enough ... so we will have to use it as is for this trip... hope that works.
