Rock Guards
While washing my trailer I discovered cracks in my rock guards.
My dealer advised me that the newer rock guards are cracking and are covered under warrenty. The cracks are not visible from the outside, but can be seen from the inside. The cracks will be vertical on the curve.
It would be a good idea too check your rock guards.

Good info to know. Is this just for the 06 model year or do they know if other model years are effected.
This would be some great info to put on the QC threads.......

Got 'em
I was noticing the "striations" in my rock guards. Can't see them from the outside, but from the inside they are quite noticable. I will contact AS tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Both rock guards affected
My husband was just washing our A/S too and noticed huge cracks on the road side rock guard. We were sure a bird hadn't hit and they are vertical cracks. I came in to search the forum and saw this thread. After reading, we went inside to look out and sure enough the curbside rock guard was also crackly, but not visible from the outside. Here are our pics of the road side - from the outside and inside- and the crackly rock guard on the curbside.
Is this really covered under warranty?

Those cracks are not caused by being hit with something.
They can be caused by the original cover paper being on the plastic for a long period of time, suggesting "old" plastic.
Cracks like that have nothing to do with a slight bend that's in most rockguards.
Since it's a defect, it most certainly should be covered by warranty.
If your refused warranty coverage by a dealer, then I would suggest you contact the factory, immediately. You can arrange for a replacement later, but it's important to inform the factory asap.

We have a "crack" that looks more like a star crack in a windshield in our center rock guard. Can't see it from the outside and I've managed to ignore it for a year now.

We have one of those on our center rock guard, and we're pretty certain that it is indeed a rock chip because of the "star" pattern. We got it on one of our first trips. These vertical cracks on the side rock guards look very different. They look kind of like tempered glass that has been broken, but only at the curved areas. It made my stomach flip-flop when I first saw them. The cracks are huge. I was pretty shocked to see them.

New Rockguards!
Airstream sent us new rockguards. We have to send the old ones back so that they can investigate them. We are so pleased. The new ones didn't line up with the original catch on the body of the Airstream by 1/4 inch. Paul had to lower the catch on the rockguard...better to drill new holes on them than on the body of the trailer. Airstream had not heard of this issue before we contacted them. I hope this is a rare occurrence.

A good preventive measure, you might want to keep in the back of your head, is to make sure that, if your rockguard is exposed to sunlight, it will be hot and, if you were to wash your rig with cold water, the rockguard will crack.
As an experiment, get yourself a set of clear, thick plastic water glasses and throw one in the microwave for two minutes, then take it out and try to fill it with cold water...I sorta kinda did this by accident, except I pulled the plastic glass out of the dishwasher, which had just finished drying....you will get the same vertical striation cracks you had in your rockguard, guaranteed.

This makes me upset. I noticed 2-3 cracks on our rock guards last year while it was under warranty but didn't mention it because I thought we had hit something. Now I find it is a manufacturing defect.
We are 5 months out of warranty. Does anyone think I can get these replaced as a goodwill gesture?

Call Airstream customer service and ask. You have nothing to lose by trying.
I have what looks like damage from an impact, but if the rock guards are defective, it could be more prone to such damage. I'll ask when we go to JC just before the warranty runs out about whether they are covering that.

We are looking to buy a rock guard but now I'm a bit nervous too. Is this happening to the new ones? Any suggestions on where to buy from?

Kelly,
The folks who are experiencing this problem seem to be those with new coaches. If you buy a rockguard from Airstream for your rig, it should be fine. I bought mine four years ago and haven't had a problem with it yet.

Hi Kelly,
I really hope this is a rare occurrence (I think the few of us on Airforums with the problem are the only ones), but even if this is a common problem, I'd still want the rock guards. Rocks do fly, and I'd hate to see one go through a window. We have a rock "star" on our center window guard (which we didn't replace)...that rock guard saved the window. They are expensive though. The sticker was still on our guards when they arrived...$947 for the full set.
We will also follow Stingray's advice about not washing in the heat. The striations do look like plastic that has crazing marks from a dishwasher. However, we've had a really cool summer, and we're not sure we ever washed it in the heat. Though, we might have last summer and just didn't notice the striations until this year. The road side rockguard got so bad that we had to tape it from the inside because little chunks were falling out.

One other thing too, Kelly, though I don't know if it makes a difference or not....the rock guards on the newer coaches are three-piece units...ours are one-piece.

It sounds like we are going to need a 3 piece and have the middle modified to fit our model 'Minuet'... sounds like the 3 pieces might be a good thing... thanks again for all the input ;-)
