Nose Art - 1978 Sovereign Segment Protector

Installed Segment Protectors this past weekend - and Nose Art.

Segment Protectors had been on my wish list for a long time -

Curb side segment protector in place. About three hours of my time.

Driver Side Segment Protector - about two horus of installation time.

Front end view after installation. Note the square hole on the driver side I had to cut out for the umbilical cord.

Nose Art - another long time obsession left over from my past life - used to own several different airplanes.

The "Nose Art" is printed on aluminum panels. I tried having them printed on bare aluminum, but the images appeared to be washed out - print quality on a white backround was much improved.

So, it's inappropriate to ask but I will anyway...

Is that your Missus?

This looks good.

The only thing I would have done different is used printed vinyl that was clear so that the image would show just where the pic and text are this would also let me change the image as often as needed.

Great job!

Inapproprate is not in my knowledgebase - yes, that would be she.

Even though I often over step the "appropriate" boundary, by way of hard learned self-preservation I HAVE limited my answers from time to time...therefore I will only that I am sure she will appreciate the compliment.

On a more accurate note I will point out that she was born AFTER 1950, not much, but after 1950.

If you have the art work on a disk or thumb drive, you can have it printed so that there is no background. see my avatar at left.

Great look. I was born in 1950 and always liked nose art because my father would have magazines around that I loved as a kid!

87MH,

Where did you acquire the segment protectors, if you don't mind sharing the info.

Thanks

Segment protectors are available from the Airstream dealers. They are easy to install yourself. I don't know how well they would polish as they are Stainless Steel.

Segment Protectors were purchased new...

Segment Protectors were purchased as a set from Camper Repair in Montavallo, Alabama. Same price as offered by Out of Doors Mart in North Carolina. (Out-of-Doors Mart)

ODM has a decent guide for the placement of the new mounting hardware. Click on "AS Parts", then "Segment Protectors", then "Hardware" once you get into their website.

I found the mounting to be an easy two person job. Used Stainless Steel Screws instead of any type of rivets and Acryl R to seal all holes and as a sealant around all of the mounting flanges. Figured the AcrylR would prevent the screws from backing out, plus, they are easy to inspect since they are fully presented whenever the unit is washed. I actually had a few rivets installed when I decided to go with the SS screws...drilled out the rivets and went with an all screwed installation.

There are at least three different types of segment protectors offered...I really wanted the taller mount, but the original designed for the trailer certainly looks and fits much better.

I can render nose art with an airbrush...but once it's done- it's done! And that might affect the resale value of the stream.
