Here is an example of a "home-made" mud flap which I cobbled together with a welder. I have posted these pics a few times in the past. It is very easy to install/remove the mud flaps and very light weight. I have used this for two years and have not had any dings in the trailer. The truck also has factory mud flaps.

Wow! I like that, much simpler and easy to build than I had in mind! Mind if I copy the idea for my own use?

Nice storage idea. Almost my entire shop is on wheels even though things don't get moved much and the big lathe is bolted to the floor.

Stole it from another forum member...can't remember who or what thread. Customized the dimensions for my own application, but took about 2 hours to build. Had 3/4" ply sitting around and IIRC the casters, with brakes and 100# capacity each, were about $16 for all.

I believe it was to the left of the window - small ding - nothing much to fret about honestly - I just assume that some kind of mud flaps will be a reasonable prophylactic

I'm not actual too worried about a ding or dings

I think I will try to DIY some flaps with my dad soon

That is why I recommend both wheel well TV mudflaps AND Rocktamers. Rocktamers protect about from the beltline down to and including the banana wraps. The body of the truck protects up high for most of the front of the AS....BUT...if you install the RTs and stand behind and examine the protection, if you can see tire tread between your eye and any portion of the AS behind you, it is exposed to rocks. You will find that where the body of the truck rolls under behind the rear wheel you will see exposed tread which will dent right where you describe. A good wheel well flap closes off that exposed tread for complete (direct) stone throwing. You can still get minor nicks from rebounds and ricochets, but it's those direct throws that kill.

I looked in my pic library, and although this pic doesn't show directly, if you can imagine standing directly behind the right top corner of the RT and looking down at the point where the tire meets the road, you would see a somewhat triangular portion of tread about 6 - 10 square inches in area. draw an imaginary line from that exposed tread through your eye and out the back of your head and where the "line" intersects the AS skin is vulnerable.

I know they work. When we travel in the rain you can see the water spray go out around the trailer for the most part.

I have an SOB that I use occasionally for my work. I was traveling on some unpaved lease roads and needed mudflaps in a hurry. Took about 2 hours to build them, just pull 2 pins and they come off the hitch. They seem to be working, I haven't noticed any damage from rocks.
