Nice
That looks pretty swell. My old and ugly piece is going to be replaced with a framed piece of diamond plate aluminum that has a patriotic cutout on it.

camperski,
Nice job...more like cheap insurance. Even brand new the rock guard costs less then a wing window.

My daughter thinks it looks "weird", thanks again Richard. Any more thoughts on a rally near your place next year?

My New Glasses Too
Took me a couple of tries to get this right, as I wanted to use the holes left from my front awning. It worked out after using the awning bracket as a template. Then I messed around with the rubber hold down thingies, trying to decide how to mount them. Sure helps modernize the 78.
First Spring project. It was 65 here yesterday and today. AHhhhhhhhh....

65 Degrees
65'...must be nice (by the way-looks great!), I can't even get up the acess road to the machine shed wher my AS is kept! Count your blessings--15 + inches of snow yesterday . My drive way is so narrow from piling snow I can't hardly open the truck doors.
You mentioned the old mounting. did the shield come with a standard mounting? I am just curious if you had to play around with it very much. The mounting looks so good. A front window gaurd is one of the items on my to do list.

I used the holes from the awning mount. Unfortunately they were all out of line from whomever put that thing on way back.
Using the mount as a template helped, but some of the holes were a bit distorted, and so, I used sealant on the whole back of the long top hinge, and stuck every rivet in the sealant ( tremco) before riveting. Then I sealed over the rivets on top as well. Hoping not to see any leaks.
Yesterday I mountd the rubber t handles, and sealed them as well.
By the way I shined up that front curved panel using the homebrew metal polish made from white rouge and paint thinner.
It worked ok, but took a lot more elbow grease to remove it that my usual stuff. I gues it needs more rouge , less thinner.
Made a pint for about a buck or less.

Any good-looking, home-made rock guards out there?? Would love to protect the front windows, but shelling out $400 or so leaves me cold. And- individualized, hand-crafted is good! Pics, please- if you got 'em. -thanks

She looks awesome! We were talking this past weekend about getting some sort of shelter for our AS. I noticed you have what we were thinking about. How do you like it?

CHEAP sunglasses?
I'm still looking for more ideas on "cheap sunglases", if anybody has come up with a way to protect the front wing windows for traveling without going the $400 route. I saw a thread by NickCrowhurst showing some made from foam and sailcloth, and someone here mentioned making one from diamond-plate- Any other home-made ideas? I wish there was a way to do it without drilliing any more holes into the skin! That said, the official Airstream rockguards DO look nice, very sleek. Nice job on the install! -tim

If you will, take the "thought processing" or thinking cap.. down the corrugate roofing material route? I saw an Airstream about 10 yrs ago that had this material used for the front-window guard. It was opaque in the nature of the material. I can't imagine it cost being anywhere near 400$~!
Just my take..

Seems like it would not be too difficult to fabricated a foam padded bra (like they make for sports cars not females ). It could be used for traveling protection only since you would not be able to see out but it would protect against most rock strikes. Dan, Andy, Lewster, VTS, anybody, do you stock these?

53FlyingCloud- I've seen those too, usually on the 60's trailers that don't have the curved wing windows. That is an idea though- thanks.
Vhord- I too was thinking along the lines of some foam or bubble padding, followed by something more rigid, and then-? I got stumped by how to attach it, temporarily, with the fewest possible new holes in the skin. I'm asking about this because I'm thinking of doing 1 long drive down to south Texas, staying put for 2 or 3 months, and then driving back to Colorado. It may turn out that the $400 one is the best overall choice, but I'd sure like to give a home-made one a chance.
Andy- if I decide to go that route, I'll give you a chance- but I'm guessing the shipping from Ca. to Co. isn't going to be cheap for that big thing.
Can you all tell I'm tired of spending $$$ on this thing? 'Bout as bad as owning a boat!! (but I love her..)
