Algae growing rock guard
This is what was inside of my rockguard when I opened it (figured it was an easy fix). I've cleaned up the window & recaulked, etc. Now I have to put the rock guards back on. They need new gaskets (where do I get them?). I would like to know how to prevent this green slime from growing again! It looks like it had an opening on the bottom for rain to drain out, but yuck!
Another question....The PO caulked the two rivets that I think are weep holes in the little gutters above the windows. Are they supposed to be caulked, or are they supposed to be open to drain water? I think it's the latter, but before I start digging the caulk out of the holes, I just want to double check. Thanks in advance!

If it's like ours the rivets are used to line up the window hook lip when you need to replace it in it's bracket at the top. They don't really do anything else. Ours are not caulked however.

The weep holes I believe are for water to escape from the window.

Hi Becky -- I suspect the contact of the gasket promotes holding moisture up against the skin. Are you storing in shade so that wetness doesn't dry up very fast? This is factor #1 IMO.
Light is the other contributing factor and allows photosynthesis and algae growth. This is not like mildew where you have residues and maybe use bleach or a disinfectant -- soap and water only is what I'd use. I'd try sponge-soaping the gasket too and not think of replacing it.

I thought these were an aftermarket item. The metal pieces that hold them in place are all rusty & falling out. I'll get in touch with Airstream & see if they have the same ones. They were like this when I purchased the coach, but it was parked in the sun with no trees around. I think water was trapped in there or something. Thanks for the advise & I think I'll keep them, HiHo!

Becky,
I sent one of the parts folks your photo and it only took them about 5 minutes to respond with the part number. If they have the gasket maybe they still have the brackets too. Have fun.
