Is that large chrome cap sufficient to protect the bearings, or should I also put a standard cap to cover the end of the axle?

You NEED a bearing cup...
Are you the original owner?
The bearing hub does have some unusual marks on the end.
Possibly from the cup coming off and loose inside the wheel center trim.🤔

Cap should always be protecting the bearings from road grime, dust, dirt and water.
Find the one that fits in with help from soft faced hammer.

Halford,
Just curious how an axle gets built, shipped and installed w/o the dust cap.
Gotta be video of it somewhere.
I started messing with that bearing type and cap on my grandmothers 1962 Olds back in jr high days.

Thanks for the replies. It makes sense that a cap should cover the bearings. I’m going to remove the street side wheel tomorrow and measure cap diameter and get the correct cap before I service the bearings.

There you go. Do not look at videos designed for boats to lube Airstream tires. the AS will NOT go in water.

Never lube bearings
Thanks Halford
I’m familiar with service procedures for classic tapered cup cone bearing servicing.
Both Dexter and Timken have tapered bearing service videos. Here is Dexters but they are showing with grease-able cap.
And by Timken.
My feeble attempt at humor was what happened to the original bearing cap?
