Lug Nut Caps

I have a 2007 AS FB SE. I periodically check the torque at 110 # as that is what my manual and the dealer recommended. Today I noticed something that I don't recall seeing. The caps on many of the lug nuts seemed loose and I could move them with the pressure of my fingers. None the less the nuts torqued to 110 #. Are the caps a solid part of the total lug nut or could they be an add on to enhance the appearance? I could remove one lug nut and check for myself but with my mechanical abilities I thought I would leave well enough alone and not ruin the holiday week-end. I would appreciate your help.

Hi Allen. You've got it right -- those covers are for looks only. I believe the Classics have shiny solid lug nuts (stainless?).

Thanks Guys
I was so proud of myself for getting everything up and running until I ran into those caps. You have restored my confidence.

I recently had some small warranty items taken care of at Jackson Center and they replaced 3 of the lug nuts that had cracks on the covers.

I was told that with the cover on they are inch (imperial) size but once the cover falls off you have to use a metric socket to remove them.

You are also going to learn to repack the wheel bearings each year, right?

I ordered my Safari looking wheels from Trailer Tires and Wheels - trailer tires, boat trailer tires, trailer wheels, boat trailer wheels, aluminum trailer wheels along with 24 of the stainless capped lugnuts. They are nothing more than stainless caps over standard lugnuts. Are you torquing the lugnuts with a standard socket or an extended socket attached to your torque wrench? I noticed that the standard 3/4" socket does not cover the entire lugnut so I am going to buy a 3/4 extended socket to make sure the lugnut to fully encased. If you look at the last picture you can see how the lugnuts I received from them end and the case is hollow inside.

I'm going to use one locking lug per rim and keep the other 4 I ordered as spares in case this happens.

Make it easier on yourself and go buy some chrome or stainless lugnuts and replace the ones with the caps. A cap will come off at the most inappropriate time (like changing a flat on the side of the road in nowheresville) and you won't be able to get the lugnuts off. IMHO the person who designed these lugnuts needs to be cut and bled out alittle.

I did buy an extended socket and its works great.

I actually did get the wheel bearings packed. That's why I was tightening the lug nuts. Just to be certain after I had driven a distance.

NOPE.

they are all "CAPS" even on the classics....

stainless over iron, but caps nonetheless, like the pix davidz71 offers....

several of the lugnutCAPS on my unit are loose or cracked at the inner edges.

the caps do serve a purpose,

they trap water and moisture INSIDE the lugs, which increases rust, sticking and bedevils accurate torque application.

recently i replaced a dozen with napa brand that are the same design.

there are SOLID stainless versions available, gorilla makes some really nice ones...

but they 3-4 times the price per nut...

cheers

Anyway, they're cheap.

I remembered theVAP guys saying Tim Shephard's Ambassador project received free SS lug nuts. Not so. It looks like the contributor of his wheels gave him similar lug nuts. Guess the donor could afford it at $.86 each.
