Thumbs down Lug nut caps

FYI Airstreamers. The cosmetic lug nut caps will spin on the
steel lug nuts they cover. Found three bad caps on my 2017 FB 25. When checking torque, the faulty caps will spin and not allow you to correctly tighten the lug nuts. The bad news is you can't remove the lug nuts without splitting the phoney caps. Visit your tire dealer and replace all the capped nuts before you get stuck with a flat and can't remove the nuts.

I replaced all of mine before towing this season after noticing that most were split. I don’t understand that design. Thanks!

Don't forget to replace them on your TV/truck too. Particularly Ford. That's where my problem was.
PS - I also replaced them on my AS.

Scroll up to the little blue box. Enter "replacement lug nuts"

Get the specs and go to Amazon, your local auto parts store, or hot rod retailer.

My Airstream dealer had them in stock so I bought from them.

I got mine at my local tire shop. A buck apiece.

Just replaced all four tires on our 2014 fc. several of the lugs had rust under the caps and one lug nut had to be “nudged” in order to loosen it. Several caps were split. I replaced ALL of them!

You get what you pay for in lug nuts, cheap lug nuts just replace the problem with the same problem. You want solid lug nuts as the caps will fail when it is least convenient leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere leaving your trailer behind while you drive seeking cell signal to call for help.

You want something like McGard solid hardened steel lug nuts if you want to know you will get them off again. You should expect to pay about $4/lug not for quality.

So - I fished as you suggested in the forums and came across McGard 60410 chrome bulge 1/2x20 most often (but not always). Did I catch the right fish for a 2012 27FB Flying Cloud (see amazon link below)?

I'm replacing all 4 wheels at the beginning of next season and want to address the OEM lug covers at the same time.

And that's 6 sets of these for a shade over $93 to outfit them all.

Thanks!

That is exactly what I bought for my AS, they are superior quality to that junk that AS put on it. Seems a fair investment to spend $100 to protect your trailer, must be about 0.01% or less.

That price seems about what I recall. I got the McGard solids. They will last over those chrome capped ones. New endurance tires soon then maybe the spending will end someday.

Nope. There is always something that needs improvement or fixing. Embrace the Suck—in the vicinity of your wallet. It’s all you can do.

How might one determine if their Airstream is afflicted with the cap-style lug nuts?

My trailer is a 2017, the model year when Airstream shifted, at some point, to solid lug nuts (or so I’ve read).

My trailer was built in the third week of March 2017 and has solid lug nuts.

For your peace of mind it would be well worth taking one off to inspect it. The type would be obvious.
