Your opinion about my existing hitch

Hello ASers-

I would like your learned opinion re my existing hitch, keep or replace?

I have a 1985 29ft RB Sovereign, which i have owned about 4 years.

Photos of existing hitch attached (hopefully).

TV is Suburban 1500 with tow package.

I am planning on checking my hitch set up with the weigh scales very soon.

Have recently had two new Dexter axles put in and raised body 1 inch.

Run Maxxis ST235/80R16/1 tires on AS trailer.

Noticed some wiggling recently with some tractor trailers and brisk, but not strong winds.

If the facts lead to a new hitch, I am favoring a Blue Ox from what I have read.

Thank you for your assistance.

I pulled a 34' for about 10 years with the same hitch. TV was a 2500HD GMC and had no problems with sway or any other bad feelings! Only reason I now have a Hensley, my brother-in-law gave me his as he didn't like it for pulling his cargo trailer. The Husky Center Line has never been "popular" hitch, but I preferred it over the Reese Strait Line and Curt I had before. Most important is to have the bars properly matched to the tongue weight. You've raised the trailer a couple of inches perhaps, between the new axles and the wide 16" tires.

If the hitch hasn't been adjusted, you may be putting more weight on the back axle of the Suburban. You may need to raise the ball mount on the shank. However, I would start by adding tension on the bars to move more hitch weight to the front tires of the tow vehicle.

The rearward cant of the ball mount looks good. Don't make it vertical.

I recommend watching this video; it will give you the best understanding of how and why:

Take the instructions, and walk thru the entire setup and adjustment checking each measurement and adjustment.

Since you have raised the trailer, you will probably need to raise the hitch one hole on the shank, but that is to be determined by measuring as shown in the instructions.

Hitch for AS

We purchased a 1996 30’ Classic Excella 3 years ago and it came with a Hensley hitch. Didn’t know what a Hensley hitch was or how it worked, but did a little investigating. After towing “Faith” for over 60,000 miles in every conceivable situation, except Alaska, we had to replace the hitch last year. I would have nothing else other than a Hensley hitch no matter what kind of trailer I was towing. Never have sway and at times I forget she is behind me. And for those who say it is hard to hook up, give me a call and I will walk you through it.
