twisted safety chains - damage to chain holders
I seem to have made a hash out of fastening my safety chains (probably during a pre-dawn hitch-up) and found my curbside chain in a twisted mess with the chain fastening ring on the truck bent down and the u-shaped chain holder on the hitch bent down and stretched across the hitch assembly. Is the remedy for this as simple as finding a shop with equipment to heat and bend the chain holder back into shape or is there more that needs to be done (I bent the truck piece back into shape myself) to repair the damage.

You will have to take it to someone who can decide whether the chain holder can be salvaged. If it's bent badly enough it may be better to replace it for safety reasons. Any welding shop should be able to do it.

With heat?
I could never bend the chain flange on our receiver with-out it.
As noted above, a picture would help a lot. The chains must have been very short/tight>

On the truck side, we use heavy-duty screw type quick links to adjust length ... might save you some agony ...

Makes it sound like you didn't use heat to bend the ring on the truck back into shape, else you would've had heat available to bend the chain holder on the hitch, too.
Which raises the question, if you could bend it back into place without heat, is it still strong enough to support the weight of your trailer tongue?

How did this damage come to happen?

Twisted Safety Chains Question
Thanks to all that responded. Someone asked how it happened. I think I had the chains crossed above the bars on my Hensley Hitch instead of below the bars. When the trailer made a sharp turn the chain wasn't loose enough to swing freely. I hired a local mobile welder to look at the project. He cut off the old oval chain holder on the underside of the hitch and welded on a new one made from 1/2" bar stock. It seems okay now. We will see.
