Receiver, shank slop...

Mercedes 2021 GLE 53 SUV AMG with tow package mated to 2021 AS 23FB International. Seems to be a bit too much slop in the receiver causing banging sounds at low speed little bumps. Is this normal? If not, how to tighten things up? Some kind of shim?

I added three wide flat welds on both sides and bottom of the shank ground to fit.

We had slop on our F150 shank. I added a shank stabilizer from Tractor Supply. It took care of the movement. But, we keep the shank and ball on the truck all the time. If you don’t, Robert Cross’ fix would be better. Good luck

I use a fancy clamp that looks like a u-bolt that pulls up on the shank. I use it with my standard hitch.

I had my WDH shank welded like Robert’s and it is quite snug now. I also moved the hitch pin hole to shorten up the shank projection. Clunking is almost non-existent now.

I would be concerned that your tongue weight is too low and/or you don’t have enough weight distribution torque if it’s rattling around on small bumps.

Have you measured the dimensions of the receiver hitch under your Mercedes? I wonder if it is built to the international metric units. Also measure accurately the ball mount that you are using. Maybe it is the standard 2 square.

The ball mounts are certainly "slip fit" into the receiver, but it seems like the amount of clearance your photo shows is excessive. Certainly welding and grinding would close the gap.

Hitch stabilizer

I bought a hitch stabilizer on Amazon (trailer hitch stabilizer). Search on that term on Amazon and you will see a lot of choices. Works well and doesn't cost much.
