Perplexing Husky hitch issue-square bars
I bought a 23' Flying Cloud, and it came with a Husky Centerline weight distribution hitch. I had to lower the ball mount to get it to close to the correct height for my F-150, but so far so good. Now here is the weird part. The pins that hold the square spring bars in place were 5/16 diameter. They were also deformed, bent etc. The trunnion has a hole for a 3/8 pin. So, a mismatch for sure. The bars and hitch both say Husky on them. Being somewhat frugal (cheap) I tried to drill out the spring bars to 3/8 figuring the reason for the deformed safety pins was the hole size mismatch. That did not work as the bars were too hard, so a machine shop drilled them out for me for $10. The Husky pins I bought were 3/8, so what could go wrong. Anyway, a test run of 60 miles showed the new pins also bent to where I had to pound them out. I cannot find the part number for new spring bars, and an older instruction sheet shows the safety pines to be 1/4 inch. Odd. So, anyone have an idea what I have? I am thinking it is a collection of parts made up into a hitch. Should I just stop messing with this hitch and get a new one? If so, what is a decent brand / model that wont break the bank? Max 6,000 trailer weight, maybe 700-730 lbs on the tongue. Thanks!
