On the ball

I want to get a class 4 ball mount for my 2" receiver that has a rise of 2-1/2 inches. Any time I need to shift the 29' Sovereign around close by without dragging out the Reese Dual cam head, I can use a lighter class 3, but there are times and trips that I would prefer to just to haul "on the ball" with my 2500 Dodge Diesel. 2-1/2 inch rise puts my ride at the correct level.

There are a lot of class 4 mounts that meet the 2-1/2 inch requirement but they are all for 2.5 or 3.0 inch receivers. I have a 2 inch. I cannot find a class four that has either a 2 or 2-1/2 inch rise. If anyone knows a place to look other than Amazon, etrailer, or northern tool let me know. I'm interested in a simple one piece mount, not a complex adjustable.

My understanding is Class 4 does not come in 2”. The 2” receiver is generally limited to Class 3 or less.

In other words, it’s really the receiver that determines the Class. At 2”, you are dealing with Class 3. Any shank that fits in it will be Class 3, not 4.

I am surprised your 2500 only has a 2” receiver.

no, cant do

class 4 will not work on 2", the receiver is not rated for the class 4 load. that is why you cant find

its like wanting to plug a 30 Amp clothes drier into a 15 Amp socket ie not designed for that

A couple of options from Reese - they will ship to a dealer for you:

https://www.reeseprod.com/products/b...ll-mounts-2-in

https://www.reeseprod.com/product/70...tch-ball-mount

3" square tube (2.5" opening) receivers are relatively recent, I think. 2.5"/2" opening has been the standard for decades, for weight distributing hitches with a capacity of 10,000 lbs or more.

Your trailer - a 31"? - has an empty weight of 5000 to 5500 lbs, and a GVWR in the 7000 lb range. 1970s models were a bit lighter.

Or is an Ambassador? They were 29' long.

I have a 2003 Dodge/RAM 2500 and it has a 2 inch receiver that the owners manual describes as a class 4. I think this is common to all of the third generation (2003-2009 RAM HD) models.

Quoting from the Curt website, Class 4 boasts a gross trailer weight capacity of up to 10,000 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity at 1,000 lbs. Also, like class 3 hitches, class 4s can be used in combination with a weight distribution hitch to increase the overall towing capacity. With a weight distribution system attached, the gross trailer weight capacity increases up to 14,000 lbs. and the tongue weight capacity increases to 1,400 lbs. This makes the class 4 hitch a prime candidate for towing large boat trailers, RVs, livestock trailers and other similarly large trailers. The class 4 trailer hitch is commonly found on such vehicles as mid to full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. Class 4 hitches accept ball mounts and other hitch-mounted accessories with a 2" x 2" shank.

The attachments are from my 2003 Dodge RAM HD Diesel Owners Manual. On my truck I am limited to a Gross Trailer Weight of 10,000 lbs, but with a WD hitch I can have a tongue weight as high as 1500 lbs.

Whats the dead weight rating of bumper pull for your 2500 and what is the weight of that trailer tongue ?

From your profile info, its likely you are exceeding the weight rating for a 2005 without weight distribution....

Those 1970s Airstreams did not have high tongue weights. Probably not more than 550 lbs empty, 700 fully loaded. Keep in mind they were all towed by passenger cars when new.

Oh Ok thats good then. But older F250s need WD hitches around that 700 mark for bumper pull.

And some sort of mechanical sway device. Speeds in 70s were 55 max. If thats all you do now, its probably fine without sway control, but thats not reality. 70-75 is.

Thanks for all the response!

The cat scale gross weight of the trailer is 6580 lbs with 980 lbs on the tongue. I also tow an equipment trailer with a JD Tractor with front end loader and backhoe attachment, I estimate the gross weight is 7600 lbs on a two inch ball with no WD or sway control. Don't know the tongue weight but if I don't drape the loader bucket over the front rail and on to the goose neck, it will get squirrelly real quick.

I have purchased:
CURT 45311 Class 4 Trailer Hitch Ball Mount, Fits 2-Inch Receiver, 10,000 lbs, 1-1/4-Inch Hole, 4-Inch Drop, 2-3/4-Inch Rise, Gloss Black Powder Coat.

I have moved my brake controller on to the dash within quick access of my left hand on the steering wheel at 10 o'clock.

We are heading up to Blue Springs over the weekend, a short haul with only 20 miles or so on interstate.

I have long been skeptical of the effectiveness of the Reese Dual Cam with its relatively short moment arms actuated by a 2" diameter Cam. The 1985 Sovereign is 29'.

My 2005 Ram 2500 Diesel manual states that my frame mounted class IV hitch is rated for 12,000 gross and 1200 tongue. I'll report back after the ride. By the way I rarely exceed 65mph but I might this trip
