This morning, I called Proven Industries support and talked with Jill. She was both pleasant and competent. So, after sending a few photos and measurements, we determined that the coupler was "overstamped" on the right (curb) side. Too much metal on that side wouldn't allow the lock housing to go into position. So, using my trusty angle grinder, it took all of about five minutes to get the right side to match the left, and - woo hoo - the lock assembly fits perfectly.
I'm confident that Proven Industries has one of the best hitch locks available, and their support was clearly interested in helping... kudos to them... 'specially Jill!

I'll be delighted, but give me a couple of days... it's darned cold (for this old guy) and going to be even colder until Saturday afternoon!
Did you see the lonely photo I posted in post #11? I guess it's not all that explanatory anyway.
I'll get some photos soon.

Ahhh... sorry Rob, I "saw" it but missed it !
I had it in my head that you worked on the fake ball part.
Mine too is tight and glitchy, but the more I play with it it the easier it gets.
I switched out the PI aluminum puck lock for a hardened Cobra Lock with special keying and feel just that much better.
Excellent product all the way around, well worth the investment and added peace of mind. Good folks too over at Proven Industries.
Glad you got things worked out and thanks for the photo.
Stay Warm ! Spring is just around the corner.....

No, no, no Mike..... don't let this little blip deter you.
The lock is made so nicely that a little "tailoring" could be in order.
Tolerances in the stampings of the hitch, a bump, dent or bruise and / or welding irregularities of the lock frame might just need to be fine tuned a bit to marry them together perfectly is all.

So, it finally warmed enough for me to take a photo. To recap, just a couple of minutes with an angle grinder and the lock fits snug and secure. When my "frame paint" shows up, I'll get it all repainted

Which lock did you get? Can you give me a specific part number or whatever?
Thanks!

Rob,
It looks like you had to modify the hitch in order for the large "cap" piece to fit onto the hitch. For me, the piece giving me problems is the first piece you install with the "ball" on it. As I said in a previous post, the ball seems too big, the hitch won't lock in on it, no matter how I twist it or turn it. I'll post a few pictures later to show you what is happening, maybe you or others have some ideas.
Thx

No ideas to offer, Rich... that's just weird. Do you ever have any problems when hooking up to your hitch?

Hi Rich, I look forward to the pix, but in the meantime I would grab a friend to work topside and I would get on my back on the ground looking up into the ball socket with good light and see what you can see as you try and get it up in there. Could be the "fake ball" part needs a little trimming ?

So here are some pics:
I don't know if they will help, maybe if someone else has one, you can see if this looks right or different
Top view of ball part
This one shows the backside underneath. This is where I think the issue is. There is a right angle that looks like it should extend further and secure behind the hitch plate. On mine, it is in the middle and it hits the hitch plate, thus not allowing the ball to engage higher.
Random other shots
Thx

Why not just buy a ball, have the nut welded to the threads. Put the ball in the A$ coupler. Then lock the coupler.

Rich, About the only thing that I can offer is to urge you to contact Jill at ProvenIndustries. You can reach her at 813-489-4161
She was so very helpful as I worked through my pretty-inconsequential problem. She will probably ask you to either e-mail or text photos to her. I'm confident that she is the answer you are looking for.

I think the (not a) "problem" is that Proven Ind. is building to better/tighter tolerances than AS. As many of us have discovered, Airstream's production is a little sloppy from time-to-time and not always superior quality as expected.

I completely agree! In my particular case, the 'manufacturing tolerances' allowed differences in the overall dimensions of my tongue coupler to vary from one side to the other. The quality control parameters of neither the coupler manufacturer nor Airstream, judged my coupler to be 'out of spec.' That said, I'll bet lunch for the rest of your natural life that neither the coupler manufacturer nor Airstream dimensionally check one out of a thousand of these things... if that. Clearly, the ProvenLock was built using CNC or at least quality jigs and fixtures. It's a good product.
