Lengthening hitch

This might be oversimplifying but can you lenghten the shank on your hitch? mine has 2 positions to choose about 1 1/2" difference.

Yes, you can, but any lengthening does have some effect on the ball to axle overhang distance. But 1.5" to get the gate down....probably wouldn't notice any handling or sway difference.

You should always be conscious of lengthening that distance though.

Thanks

This was a response to a low profile jack question on a different thread> I don't know why it was moved.

I have had three different hitches with the two holes in the adjustable shank, an old Quality-S, a Reese Dual Cam, and an old style Reese. If I remember correctly, the shortened length was rated 1,200 lbs tongue weight. When slid out to the longer length the ratinging changed to 1,000 lbs tongue weight.

I have a Reese shank that has 2 holes about 1" apart for the receiver pin. The specs on it say it is rated at 15,000/1,500lb in the short position and 10,000/1,000lb in the longer position.
