How do you secure your hitch at campground?

Want to avoid leaving the hitch on TV, so how do you secure your hitch at campground so you can take day trips and hikes and still have a hitch when you get back?

If I were leaving the shank at the campground, I'd just lock it to the safety chains.

This is my solution. Originally intended to mount on a rear bumper to hold a bike rack. Click image for larger version

Another option is to put the hitch into the coupler and lock the coupler.

We just remove it and place it into the bed of the truck. We have a bed rug bed liner, so it doesn’t slide around.

I have been leaving my receiver in the trailer receiver with a padlock on the release lever. Has worked for years since I had one walk off in New Orleans about 25 years ago. Just leave it hooked up and pull it out of the vehicle receiver, make sure it is loose and not binding.

Built a wooden box to hold it in the truck bed.

Color us silly, but between having the coach stored remotely and using it as "base camp" while we spend the entire day exploring, we've gone the "Fort Knox" approach.

https://www.amazon.com/Proven-Indust...76135968&psc=1

Yes, it's heavy, but it goes on quickly and is about as theft proof as any thing offered out there (I believe it got a big "thumbs up" from the Lock Picking Lawyer, who can defeat everything!)

Another suggestion - put an Apple Air Tag on your rig.

Hi

For a lot of this stuff, "out of sight" is plenty good enough. I think I'd put the hitch in that category.

We don't lock ours to the back of the TV and never have (for decades ...). One has never wandered off on its own..... My guess is, you are no more "safe" parked out somewhere with it on the truck than with it back at the campground.

I use these 2 brackets to secure my hitch receiver and sway bars.

I simply get it out of sight and slide it under the trailer behind the wheel.
Simple and quick.
12 years never an issue.

I put it in one of the locking compartments in the trailer itself, along with the equalizer bars.

Newish to RVing, but I've been curious about this seeing the lengths some go to secure it. I threat modelled it out in my mind and came to the conclusion the effort to lock it up isn't worth the (assessed as low) likelihood it gets stolen.

But, definitely curious... exactly how often WDH hitches get stolen?
