hitch ball size

I am trying to determine the correct hitch ball size to purchase. Is there a at to know? Just purchase 26 ft and have no clue about the model. It's completely gutted so I'm starting from scratch. Jut need to get it him and I don't know what size hitch to buy?

Knowing the year of your new purchase would be helpful. I believe that the change occurred with the 1969 models. Prior to 1969 2" ball and 1969 and newer - 2 5/16" ball.

BEWARE. Previous owners may have installed a new/updated hitch that requires a different size ball. If in doubt, they are cheap enough to bring one of each size. Just in case

I think this post refers to coupler size, not the hitch. It is possible the owner changed the coupler, but not likely. That being said it is not a bad idea to bring a 2 and a 2 5/16" ball. Make sure the shank of the ball is correct for the drawbar. Please don't ask the reason I make this suggestion.
