Hensley Facelift

A week or so ago, SuEllyn decided that Lucy's Hensley Arrow was looking pretty sad. She went about giving it a facelift without any disassembly.

She started by chipping off the old Orange paint. She then sanded the casting, taped off and covered other areas. She primed it, and then repainted it Hensley orange (or close thereto - she bought the Rustoleum orange spray paint at Wal-Mart). She had gotten a new set of stickers from Hensley and applied them after the srveral coats of orange had dried for two days. She also added her own reflective stripe to cover the area that gets rubbed by Lucy's umbilical.

It came out really good, and looks fresh and new again. Her are a few pictures of the process.

The decals are a really great touch. Looks new again.

Does Hensley charge for the decals?

Possible rally income maker. Hensley mobile service.....

Hensley did not charge for the new decals. The main sticker even has our unit's serial number on it.

She was needing a little attention. Lucy is gone traveling so much that things like a Hensley sprucing-up get put on the back burner. In this instance, the Hensley painting was done at home, but hadn't fully dried when we left, so the stickers were applied on the road.

I'm impressed with the fact that it was completely painted that well without even removing it!

Very nice job. How did she sand it without getting any sand in the bearings?

While she was sanding the orange head, she had the lower end wrapped in garbage bags. She also used a shop vac with a brush head to vacuum the sanded area often during the process, and blew the area with compressed air.

Sean, are you doing anything differently than Hensley to make the ProPride finish more durable? You should really consider a 'signature color' to make the ProPride stand out.

Haven't had any problems with our finish other than one special we did in Silver. The steel is pre-treated on the 3P before powder coating and the oven temperature is properly monitored.

As for the signature color, I never realized in all my years at Hensley how many people DID NOT buy that hitch because it was orange. I'd bet I have heard that comment over 500 times in the last few years.

I'm not sure anyone buys it because IT IS orange so the negative seems to outweigh the positive value to the customer in my book.

It does add some value to the company because it stands out for advertising purposes but that is a company centered reason.

Everything I do at ProPride is considered from a net positive value for the customer.

That's probably more of an answer than you were looking for but that's my thinking about color.

I agree with Sean that the hensley orange color is annoying as was the orange color of their "BrakeSmart" brake controller. I told them that more than once when I had to contact them for service. Fortunately, the haha works much better than it looks and so did the controller.

Having voiced my opinion of the haha's color, I have to reiterate that the new paint job does look very nice.

Before we rehabbed Lucy's Hensley, we discussed at length the color that we should paint it. We considered silver and charcoal as others have done, but decided that they looked much to dull. The two finalist colors were orange and blue. Orange won out because we think it looks best. A Hensley being orange is kind of like the big red numbers on an Airstream. A Hensley that isn't orange just isn't quite right.

Hi, Brian. You mean you didn't even consider Moosetags Purple, like your stripes? You, if your not already, better be really nice to SuEllen. She painted the hitch, changed your flat tire, and built the printer cabinet.
