Coupler locks

I'm looking for a reliable coupler lock to fit the original factory Marvel coupler on my 1964 Overlander. Anyone have any suggestions?

Curt makes a few different models that should fit ... I have one on my 2015 FC to safeguard my ProPride hitch, and it appears that it would also fit on my '65 GT (although, I haven't tested it). It's pretty basic and likely wouldn't stand up long to a determined thief with the right tools, but it also might make them look for an easier mark, too (which is the whole point) ...

If you're looking for a device to go around the whole coupler, and not just the latch, I've seen AmpLock devices (http://www.amplock.com) that appear to be bombproof, though I have no experience with them. They offer them for 2" balls, which is what you have on a '64, I'm guessing, or 2-5/16" for later couplers.

We use a Reese Coupler Lock...but unfortunately, all locks are just a deterrent for honest people. If some "bad guy" really wants your trailer, they will find a way. It fits our '55 and also used one on our since sold '64.

We also use the Reese Coupler. It fits on both our trailer tongues with the original hitch design. I guess if someone really wants your trailer, they’ll figure out a way to chain it to the bumper. All we can do is create a deterrent. Good luck

We use this and I am very happy with the level of security it provides. I am sure they make a model for your coupler. You can send them a pic of your coupler and they will get back to you pretty quickly. Customer service is awesome.

“Master” made a very attractive coupler lock for the 2” airstream Marvel. Its design is a pleasing compliment to the Marvel. They’re most always on eBay, $20 to $40.

I have a Master coupler lock for my 68GT, just to “keep honest people honest”, which is all you can expect from any coupler lock at any price, and any level of “super indestructibility”… A deterrent to an opportunity.

I wholly agree that a coupler lock is a minor inconvenience to a trailer thief. It’s really not much effort to safely chain a coupler to a hitch. Any cordless angle-grinder can cut most designs apart in seconds.

The “Master” is a good looking lock for a vintage airstream.

It depends on if the OP is looking for security or costume jewelry for the trailer tongue. In addition to a quality coupler lock, one can easily remove the safety chains to further reduce the chances of theft. The coupler lock I use actually secures the safety chains as well, and it can not be cut apart in seconds.

Function or form? Decisions, decisions.

I have 1 on AS & 1 on boat trailer I trust them more that all other locks, the only way they can be removed is by picking lock then inserting allen wrench in bottom, ones that fit AS becoming hard to find as this model no longer manf. I sprayed mine brite red easy to see & may deter a thief.

I spent about a month researching hitch locks last fall, and what I found is that they are *all* susceptible to a cordless angle grinder. If there are 6 airstreams in a row and yours is the only one with a lock, the others are more likely to be stolen because of convenience. I was looking for something that would make me feel safer if I left my trailer while boondocking, but I don't think there's really anything available.

So I think the best bet is a combination of inconveniences: hitch lock, cable and lock through the wheels, and a grizzly bear (or similar dog) inside the trailer.

I also have a feeling that stickers with the message "this vehicle protected by multiple gps tracking devices" is becoming more effective as the technology becomes more realistic.

Now you’ve revealed what a tricky little guy the Master coupler lock is. That not so obvious setscrew buys some real deterrent time if you don’t already know about it..

There are much better puck locks out there. And I doubt any would be trailer thief has the wherewithal to research every lock out there to know each one's achilles heel. If they are as talented as The Lock Picking Lawyer, they would not need to be out stealing trailers.

I use a basic master pin lock. I had a boat with the same lock at the dealer for maintenance when someone beat the heck out of it with no success. It was all bent up. The dealer had to use a an angle grinder to remove the master lock. I also use a Brahma wheel lock when I leave the trailer unattended for storage.
