This is a follow up after our warranty service and getting the dealer's reply to our coupler issue. All they have done is lube the coupler. I believe that the rear securing mechanism was pretty tight and this is what caused my problem. While I had considerable experience with Bulldog couplers, I had none with the Atwood coupler that is on pre-2020 Airstreams. My difficulties have gotten better with use. The suggestions by several to have the ball at the front of the coupler helped and now works about half the time. What has always worked is closing the coupler lever (with it being not fully closed because the pin holes do not line up) and then jerking the truck forward with the trailer wheels chocked. After doing that, the coupler either closes or if you cycle it, it will close.

If you’re using an X-chock between the tires when your hitching the coupler to the ball, the coupler lock would not line up unless you remove it. I used my other set of rubber chocks on the front and back of the tires and no problem since. Still a newbie (2nd yr. AIrstreaming) but learning. I found out when I was installing the Hensley hitch main body to the coupler.
