Chain Link separation on link that attaches to hitch

I'm hoping I am wording this right.

Anyway, the 2 chains that get connected to the hitch (use the third link to connect, lift up and put in the pin) are showing some wear. to the point that the third link is started to separate on both sides.

Can I just replace the chain, or do I need to buy a new assembly? The assembly remove easily, so not a problem there.

Any recommendations for a replacement? It looks like the links on the chains were welded, is there something out there that is forged instead?

Are you talking about the chains that are used on a Reese weight distribution hitch?

Before you go mail order on something as basic as chain, check with HD, Lowes, or a local RV store.
$1.50 a link + shipping, seems a little steep.

There are different grades of chain. If you have a Feldmans or Tractor Supply store nearby, check them out. Our local Feldmans has all different grades of chains in several sizes, and of course they cut it to the length you need.
