Buying a used Airstream from another province

Does anyone know if I buy an airstream from say Manitoba, I'm in Ontario, do I have to register the trailer in Ontario. It's already registered in Manitoba. And do I have to pay sales tax on the used trailer?

Thanks,

J.

In the States, I registered and paid the sales tax in Ohio after buying it used from California last year. I’m not sure how it works there in Canada.

If you are not a resident of Manitoba you cannot register it through Manitoba Public Insurance. You can purchase a temporary transfer permit to pull it to your destination.

Hi J, you cannot register the trailer in Manitoba since you live in Ontario. You will have to get a temporary travel permit in Manitoba , affix it to the trailer and drive it to Ontario. Once in Ontario you will go to your local MTO office, pay the tax on it, transfer the ownership to you and get new plates.

I caught the subtle humour there...”do I have to pay sales tax on the used trailer”. That, sir, is funny. Not the actual paying, but rather the idea that perhaps the politicians would overlook an opportunity to squeeze us. I brought mine in used from Michigan, and taxes were involved. Register it here, and enjoy.

You can probably keep the Manitoba plates for a while but you will need to have it replated in Ontario (they will take care of taxes at that moment). It’s somewhat simpler than importing it from a seller in the States as I did. You probably don’t need an inspection but better to check with MTO and your insurer.
