Broken 7-pin cover
Got a bit impatient with a stiff plug and yanked....broke the hinged flap that covers the circular opening. Definitely don't want to drive around getting grit/road-salt/etc. in there, but also sure as heck don't want to buy a hole new wiring setup...any know any smart fixes? Or even what its called (so that I can look up the price of that replacement part)
Thought about a rubber stopper tightly stuffed in there? Or even just getting one of those 7 pin to 4 pin adapters and using that as a 'plug'.
Couldn't see any kind of branding on the unit, so I'm guessing its a stock Toyota part.

Buy them new all day long on eBay: search "Toyota 7-pin NOS". For $200.00-$250.00 can be your in just a few days, quick swap, ready to go. "OR" You can buy a standard Polk unit, spend hours figuring out the wiring, etc... I'd go "NOS" but then again, I like keeping things stock whenever possible.

I obtained a replacement plug socket from an O'Reillys auto parts store. Pretty much plug-and-play for not much $. 2004 Silverado though.

If you're looking for the *cheapest* solution, I think your idea of just using a 4 pin adapter is a good one.

If you're looking for the *cheapest* solution, I think your idea of just using a 4 pin adapter is a good one. Make sure the adapter has a cap over the four pins though.

Out of curiosity...why would the cap matter? It’s sort of a “sacrificial” piece.

Take a look at the broken cap, does it have a tab or hook that locks the plug in place? That's a good thing, keeps plug from wiggling out.
If you look at Hopkins http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.com/ you might find a replacement plug assy if your's has a snap on cable to receptacle assy.

Looks like the wiring harness just plugs into the back of the outlet. Go to Toyota and buy a whole new 7 pin outlet. Unplug the wiring harness, remove the broken unit, install the new unit.

I don't get the 4 pin quick and easy replacement idea. Wouldn't you be sacrificing your brake controller? Battery charge line?

I believe the OP was just intending to use the 7 to 4 adapter as a way to fill the socket to protect it when not in use.

You might have missed the part about a tight budget 
I think the 4 pin adaptor as a make-shift “cap” is going to work fine.

7 Pin TV Connector
Hi, Any thoughts on how improve pin engagement on the 7 Spade Pin Trailer Connector? connector is coming lose, and not sending a reliable braking and charging signal.

I’ll offer two things to look at.
First the 7 way receptacle on trailer. In general top hinged works better to hold plug in compared to bottom or side hinged versions. Top hinge hold plug in bottom gravity is working against plug.
Second the 7 way plug itself. Yours is a V blade plug? Consider switching plug only to a flat blade specifically those made by Pollak. Seems the V to V connection might not connect as well as V to flat blade.

..Don't cheap out. I have replaced a few... went with Hopkins.(this for our Burb).
8 Seasons so far.
Very well made, with a robust hinge for the cover, with handy ears for the velcro straps to secure the umbilical.
