Z71 or Z85?

I just bought a 2001 Silverado last week. I did a carfax and had a Chevy dealer get me a print out on the warranty. Everything looked good and the price was fair so its sitting in my garage now. I also got a print out on all the options and checked it against the glovebox door. Problem is its printed in Chevyspeak and I don't know what half that stuff means. Does anybody know where I can get a break down on what all that alphabet soup means in English? The truck has 4 wheel drive but has the Z85 touring supension instead of the Z71 off road package. I asked the service manager what the differance was and he said he wasn't sure. Not much help there so I thought I'd ask you guys.

I don't think that you will be sorry that your truck has the "Firm Ride and Handling Package" rather than the "Off-Road Package" based upon my experience with my 1995 K1500 Z71 Club Cab short-bed pickup. My understanding of the difference at the time included:

1. Z71 had heavy duty quad shocks, heavy duty springs with additional lift, and taller tires on cast aluminum wheels.

2. The "Firm Ride and Handling Package" included specially tuned springs with no additional lift, gas charged shocks, wider (low-profile) all-season touring tires, revised (larger) sway bars with revised bushings, and steering gear with "close ratio".

My Z71 did nothing to increase my desire to ever own another pickup of any kind. It rode like the proverbial lumber wagon empty; and even with my trailer that was only 800 pounds below its maximum trailer tow rating it still rode and handled like the proverbial log wagon. The tires were doing well to last 35,000 miles, and even the very best gas filled replacement shocks the ride still did not improve the ride quality. My K2500 Suburban rides and handles much better than the Z71 could ever hope to, and its current set of tires has covered 57,000 miles and it appears from tread measurements that they will be good for another 9,000 to 10,000 miles (same brand as was on the Z71).

Congratulations on your find. I think that you will find it to be a very versatile vehicle.

Thanks for the info. Its nice to have someplace to ask a question and get a good answer. I'm not a bit sorry about the Z-85 package and I have no intension to take this thing rock climbing so I don't think I'll need the skid plates or the extra ground clearance. But I did manage to get the AS stuck in the mud earlier this spring and had to pay someone to pull it out. So as far as I was concerned the 4x4 was non-negotiable. The truck rides great on the highway, a little choppy on rough roads but not bad at all. By far the best riding truck I've ever owned (6 so far). As far as the towing capacity my AS is listed at 6300# max. With just the wife and me and a 92# lab "puppy" we should be in good shape.

You forgot to mention that the Z71 package had skid plates to protect the transfer case and front differential. They are worth their weight in gold IF you spend any time in rocky terrain or off road.
