Yay! finally another inline 6 turbo diesel

So GM has gone and finally listened to its Isuzu diesel building partner and decided to build an inline 6 cly turbo diesel, (the only way a diesel should be built), for its 1/2 tons. Check out the specs, it will impress you.

Wow, 50+ views and not even a "nice truck"? GM not getting any love these days, or are we going to wait and see about long term longevity.

OK, I'll bite. It looks like a really "nice truck". I'm a bit surprised that the tow rating is not higher but will have to wait for all the specs.

How so? Both the FIAT/Chrysler and Ford 3.0l turbo diesel engines are V6's, not inline 6's. You'd have to go with Japanese diesels to find inline 3.0L diesels, not domestic.

I'm not surprised at the low tow rating......GM wants to protect their bigger Duramax sales. I bet you could tow up to 10,000 lbs with this engine, easily.

I’m not an engineer so take with a grain of salt....

The low tow capacity bothered me (wondering what the axles can handle and what that will mean for payload) - and I don’t know what the value is of an in-line 6 diesel - can you educate me on that?

The mileage sounds GREAT and I could easily see myself in this as a daily driver and tow vehicle (unlike my current Silverado 2500 Duramax). So I’m open - just not impressed with the low tow capacity and unclear on why an in-line 6 is noteworthy. Thanks!

Chevy/GM offers the 2.5lt inline 4 in the Colorado's. Seems nice even has an engine brake. Hope the 3lt will have the same. I don't think the v6's offer that as an option. I know the Ram little diesel doesn't. I wouldn't want a diesel without the engine brake. JMO

Gee Tony, now you are changing the rules .... domestic? Well, Spartanburg does build a lot of vehicles here in the good old USofA. Note - the 3.0 liter straight six turbo is the BMW solution. Ask Bono about his. It gets the trailer down the road quite well. Pat

Exactly! An inline 6 cylinder has a natural firing balance, which means it doesn't have to have counter rotating balance shafts to iron out engine firing imbalances that affect 4 cylinders and certain V engines. The inline engines are just inherantly stronger smoother engines, which is why early Dodges, Fords, BMW's, Merc's and Jag's had inline 6 engines that were famous. The reason why manufactuers went to V engines were for packaging reasons; shorter more compact engines.

@PKI Yes, there are some German inline 6 diesels as well, but even they have gone V configuration in a lot of vehicles, like the VW and Porsche V diesels.

Most likely will come with engine brake as an option, (tow package).

Not to burst your bubble Tony but Cummins built a 3.4L in line 6 cylinder turbo diesel back in the '80s. They were designed with Onan to be very quiet for use in generator sets. I have one in my old 1938 Ford truck. Here is a you tube video of one. Notice how quiet it is running even when he revs it up.

Not bursting any bubbles Dan, as I'm sure there are many old inline diesel engines out there still plugging away like the two Cummins 6BT's and Isuzu 6BD1a that I own (all three are beautifully smooth when running as well).

What excited me was a new inline 6 when most manufacturers, (except Cummins and Isuzu) had decided a long time ago to change over to V configuration diesels. It was just neat to see a small displacement, high hp, high torque modern inline 6 diesel that was being built by a high production domestic manufacturer.

Love the Inline 6, diesel or gas. I had a 2006 E320 CDI that was very torquey. Not trying to hijack the thread, but have any of you been following the latest on the Mercedes 450 EQ series powertrains? It consists of a 3.0L inline 6 gas engine and an electric inline motor (EQ design integrated into the transmission and used to start the gas engine and allow it to coast under electric power and of course give a power boost when you need it). First up is the 2019 CLS 450, soon to be followed by an E and yes, a GLE. But alas, no diesel for the US. Still, this hybrid uses a smaller battery than the prior hybrids, designed to power the vehicle short distances, but more interestingly, power the loads that normally would sap energy from the engine, specifically, the water pump, AC, etc, which will eliminates all belts (they all run on electric motors).

The point being, this combo will have great power and lots of torque, and the battery will be up front in the engine compartment, so no loss of space in the rear, and I imagine, no penalty in reduced towing capacity like on prior GLE hybrids (It's a small battery). The new GLE is also longer and will also feature an optional 3rd row seating. And an amazing optional active suspension system.

Of course, I would prefer an inline diesel EQ combo, but no indication that it will be introduced in the US. There is a new E class with inline 4 cyl 2.0L diesel and EQ motor combo coming to Europe, and I would love to have that one.

Always open minded but look here, My uncle leased the dodge 1/2 ton diesel and said Randy you need to drive this. I said you know I'm not a Dodge fan and never will be. He insisted. Uh, uh I'd go drive one if I were anyone looking for a 1/2 ton diesel if you like comfort on the road, cockpit features and power for what it is.
I've always been a PSD fan and still am but will not surrender 70K to another truck ever.

...as I recall, everyone including me preferred the straight Cummins powerplants be it Kenworth, Peterbuilt or White. Eschewed the "Screaming V" Freightliner that went missing at the word "hill." That is, until the V CATs showed up in the fleet. Led to fist fights over who got to drive those. The one straight CAT we had busted a crank in the middle of nowhere. Still have a preference for an in-line engine, though I can't say why.
