Yay! finally another inline 6 turbo diesel

Obviously, Audi, VW, Porsche, Skoda (not known on the US market) are using the same diesels. This is not a secret to any (European?) diesel enthusiast that BMW diesels are the best in terms of the overall performance. When BMW was selling hundred thousands of 3 liter M57 diesels (many years in row winning the best diesel engine award) in late '90, Audi/VW did not even use common rail in their diesels.

It was just neat to see a small displacement, high hp, high torque modern inline 6 diesel that was being built by a high production domestic manufacturer.

Inline sixes are inherently balanced. V6s are not.

When it comes to diesels, I wouldn't set foot in a Ford, and the internet is full of reasons why, from having to take apart the front clip and remove the cab to access the last two injectors, to major problems with the 6.0L's and later 7.3 power strokes. Having to do $10,000 of work to bulletproof one of these engines to make them work right doesn't make sense to me.

Not to mention Ford's penance for changing suppliers at the drop of a hat, even mid year, leading to confusing parts supply and critical shortages of parts for relatively new trucks.

No doubt the 6.0 International diesel was a disaster, but the new Ford diesel engines have proven to be superior to the Cummins and Isuzu. No comparison between GM and Ram on the body and interior , Fords are far superior and hold up way better. So if you want to be second or third best, that's certainty by our choice. Cheers

What is the point of possibly having a better body and interior if it won't start or break down all the time.
I'll take a Toyota Landcruiser LC79, with its old slider heater controls and 120 HP inline 6 diesel over a Ford any day; because I know it'll always start and go; that's my priority, not Ford's.

Ford make trucks easy to assemble, not to service, with crappy sparkplugs, (not enough threads, then two piece sparkplugs that the dealer charges an hour's labour EACH to change), the list is endless.

I got 210000 on my "3 rd best" and looking forward to another 100000. Yeah, it rides worse than a ford. I should know, I have ridden in each of the 3 fords my buddy has had since telling me not to get a Dodge, that they won't hold up.

I just see no advantage to a diesel in a 1/2 ton that can only tow 7800lbs. If I am going to get a diesel it's going to be the Cummins by Dodge RAM in a 3/4 ton. My son and son-in-law, both mechanics for a # of years, tell me to stay away from the power stroke and the duramax, Diesel fuel in my area is about 60 to 70 cents per gallon more. The gas mileage is about 6mpg better than my 3.5 Ecoboost in my F150. So fuel costs it's about wash. My F150 Ecoboost can tow 11,000lbs. with 387hp, 470lbs of torque at 2500 rpms and a 10 speed transmission. Please someone explain to me the advantage of this diesel over a 3.5 Ecoboost. Don't get it.

Understand discussion is on light duty trucks and inline Diesel. No comment on the light duty truck. However inline IMO hands down.

Really though all 3 automakers are putting together a nice 3/4 ton packages its a matter of what flavor you want.
I do find the 1/2 tons interesting because they are more of a niche market as the gas counterparts have become much more efficient, powerful and dependable than in previous years.
The straight 6 duramax inline should be a very interesting package for folks who are partial to diesels and I would bet my money that it will likely be a great motor. Based on family members experience with Duramax engines they are pretty good motors overall minus a few fits and spurts along the way (early years injector issues).
Recently I took a spin in my cousins Chev Colorado duramax (2.8 L) diesel. While it was just a spin around the block I was impressed with the package - it even had a button on the dash for an exhaust brake!

Went to a big party where I knew no one. Eventually spot a guy across the patio as alone and un-engaged as I. Sidled over to him, discovered he was chief engine design/engineer at FORD.

I asked “What's the best cylinder configuration”

Without hesitation, He replied “I-6”

I said “1-5-3-6-2-4”

We talked engines all night.

Is this I-6 built in house or by Isuzu? It's too bad that GM decided to end their relationship with Isuzu and now build the 6.6 Duramax in house. The Isuzu Duramax proved to be a very reliable powerplant.

You are right Pap, and I bought a rotted framed, bodied, Dodge transmission, but beautifully running 12 valve P-pump, regular oil changes 1993 RAM 2500 RWD truck with 270,000 miles on it this spring for $1,500.....which was a steal of a deal; in fact, he had 16 people interested in it just in the time it took me to go get it and for the owner to drive it to my house, (3 hours). He had it sold to me 1/2 hour after listing it. I didn't even try to talk him down in price.

How much would your not running blown diesel engine 1993 Ford sell for with just a good frame and body?
