I agree. Photocatalyst technology in hydrogen production looks very promising.

100 years ago the electric car ruled but was replaced by gasoline IC engines due to range and charge vs refueling time. I believe these same factors today will determine the winner between BEV, Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles, or some other newer technology. "Time" is the most powerful component in this equation.

Okay, maybe still not a TV but ranges are increasing. BMW claims 311-435 miles on a single charge.

To all those naysayers that righteously proclaimed, "not in my lifetime".........I hope you have your will updated and ready to go based on this report and the two in the preceding posts.

It's coming, and coming fast.

It's like watching the start of the 100 metre race; we have seen the racers (Tesla, GM, Ford, FCA, VW, BMW, Toyota, Honda......) with all the electric cars up to now being the warm up; now they are in the blocks and about to race for real.

Interesting article, and I hope the personal-computer analogy proves true.

Comments on that Canadian article mirror the comments here on this thread.

As I was evacuating Florida with hurricane Irma hot on my heels, I wondered how someone with a Tesla would fare.
What if you needed a charge and traffic was moving at a snail's pace?
More to the point, what if there were a million Teslas all trying to get far away, all at once?

Many Teslas also evacuated. Chargers were up the whole time. Did all gas stations have gas?

As mentioned a while ago, we test drove one, but I can't remember . . . Do the power settings let you toggle on an economy mode, in order to maximize battery life in between chargings? In an evacuation scenario, this might help with distance covered.

Thanks,

Peter

There is a "range" mode. Common sense helps as much as anything, though. If you're in an emergency you can just go slower, avoid flooring it, and avoid excessive HVAC use.

An interesting side note - some smaller battery Teslas are actually normal batteries that are "software limited" -- so the 60kWh is really a 75kWh with a software limit. During the evacuation, Tesla remotely removed all software restrictions, giving owners the most range possible to get out.

Thanks.

https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forum...ing-real-world

Quote from a comment: "Range Mode, as I understand it, limits AC performance and turns off the Daytime Running Lights in the daytime. In a dual motor vehicle it changes the balance between the two motors, mainly running off the smaller and more efficient front motor. The down side is less AC and less acceleration."

Does your X model have dual motors? Seems like a significant savings of energy to use the smaller motor when possible?

Thanks,

Peter

When an electric vehicle is in stopped traffic, the motor isn't idling. It's off.

Not always. My two Toyota Prius card will run air conditioning while on battery and engine will stay off unless the battery need to be charged a bit. I bet the Tesla behaves in a similar manner...

Tesla doesn’t have an “engine” to stop, but you’re correct that HVAC can be a draw of power. The analogy to idling would be vampire draw, I suppose.

When to go electric for a tow vehicle

Yup. The Prius has enough vampire draws to kill the 12 volt lead-acid battery that runs the control systems in the car in about two months. Found that out the hard way, now if one of them has to sit for a long time I put a BatteryTender on it. Sound familiar?

More irritating was that the lithium battery pack was still fully charged, but the relays that turn it on runs from the 12 volt system. High-tech stopped cold by an old tech battery. (Sigh)

In stopped traffic I used to shut off the extra stuff that ran off the 12V battery. The motor had its own 144V pack.
