When at the scales

Right down the road from us is a grain elevator operation...they have great scales, actually there are two of these Scales...One, you must drive up a slight incline. And the other scale is flush with the ground. When we ever get around to weighing both the AS and the TV hooked together- along with the W dis. hooked up and going...what is the order of what is weighed first as you would pull across the scale? and so on.

Billy, I use my local CO-OP scales too. I disconnect and weigh the Airstream then the the truck. I do the truck just for the heck of it. I really see no reason to weigh the two hooked together....I wonder if there is a need. Now, I do use a small scale to get a tongue weight.....something I want to know. When are you moving to Kansas?

Thumbs up

Billy,

To properly set-up the WD bars you will need a three platform scale.

TV steering axle
TV drive axle
Trlr axle

Cat scale

The definitive thread on the subject.

Get weight of trailer separate
Get the weight of the truck front axle
Then both
When hooked up with WD hitch repeat with
truck front axle
then both truck axles then the weight of the entire rig
subtract the weights and you have each axle weight hooked and unhooked.

That makes sense. More involved than I would have figured.

The scale readings I want is a baseline for future adjustments when necessary, thus:

1] TV alone (empty; only driver, full fuel and permanent stuff); and
1a] individual tire readings

2] TV alone, (loaded; all pax, plus gear for travel plus above); and
2a] individual tire readings

3] TT alone, (empty; full fresh water & propane plus permanent stuff); and
3a] individual tire readings

4] TT alone, (loaded; all gear & supplies for travel plus above); and
4a] individual tire readings

5] TV & TT hitched, but WD not applied; and,
5a] individual tire readings

6] TV & TT hitched, with WD applied

7] TV & TT hitched, WD applied, all tires on starboard; individual readings

8] TV & TT hitched, WD applied, all tires on port; individual readings.

Being exhaustive about WD actuation and tire pressure/load concerns.

One adds pax to 4 & 4a to learn what loads the parked TT undergoes: the load seen in the TV in 2 & 2a relate to tire load when TT parked. Etc. The "margin of reserve" (12-15% on TT tires), and being sure that no position on the TV is overloaded, plus that across-the-axle pressure is predicated on the tire with the highest load.

Since re-weighs are about one dollar at a CAT Scale, one can combine a good number of passes across the scale as convenient

.

What happened recently, is Big Hill Lake contacted me for a position. We shot up there yesterday to take a look. And to meet the personnel. We got the position but I still am processing paperwork and tests.

The Cat scales cost ten dollars first time and then two dollars eveyrtime after that. So I figure we would pass through once and then pull to the side and make adjustments there- and then go through again till it's improved and fixed. So what you are saying is everything hooked up should weigh equal across the entire length of both truck and trailer.

Ideally you should transfer the weight removed from the front axle when you drop the tongue onto the rear BACK TO the front axle with the WD setup...

Putting too much weight onto the front axle puts a tremendous strain on the hitch and the truck and trailer frame.

Make at least three adjustments to the tension bars in order to observe the effect.

Billy,

Great news with the Job!! Is it Art related?

Pictures worth a lot of werds.....

1st ticket...TV loaded for camping
2nd ticket...TV and AS loaded for camping, no weight distribution.
3rd ticket...TV and AS with WD set. Notice all but 100lbs of TV alone front axle weight has been distributed back to the steering axle.

Door Jam sticker with axle weight ratings.

Ok AirForums Community - I'm officially cornfused!

Went to local cat scales this morning. Got on platform, pressed button and told the operator I thought I needed 3 weigh ins. Not a good start. She was pretty ticked off. "can't let you do that" she said. Thankfully a trucker offered his advice to get the weights and not tick her off. So this is out of order and still incorrect but it's what I have to start with.

Picture below is 3 trips. From left to right it's the full rig with 6" of WD jack lift on the Propride. Second one is truck only (parked and disconnected the trailer). After doing the math, I called Sean as it seemed odd I was losing 200 lbs off the steer axle. He suggested another inch on the jacks and the third ticket is that weight. VERY ODD since with the additional WD applied that took 60 more lbs off the steer axle??

Ok, next pic is my hand math of the delta on the axles based on all 3 tickets. The trucker I mentioned earlier said I'd be able to calculate the tongue wight after the first 2 trips. He didn't say how so I guessed - but my guess changed the TW after the third trip so I guess I didn't find the right formula. :-/

I'm WIDE open to your thoughts, insights, questions and suggestions. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

A couple additional notes. One one of these trips I sat in the truck (I'm pretty sure it was the 3rd one) while the other 2 I was standing on the steer axle scale outside the truck as the operator wasn't giving me any time to adjust....

Second - the PP jacks are connected in the middle of 3 holes and I have 1000lb bars. If I connect these at the bottom hole, will that increase the push of weight to the steer axle?

Thanks muchly!!

can you post pictures of your rig? side shots at a distance and a side shot of the hitch would be nice too. if the setup isn't level it will skew your setup.

Sure. Took this one this morning before heading out to the scales. So this is what it looks like losing 200 lbs off the steer axle (first trip across scales).

Let me see if I have some of the hitch....

i'd send that picture to Sean. you may need to change the stinger height and angle a bit.

don't rely on this but i think the stinger needs to tilt back more because the bar angle is getting high. even after the angle change you might need to drop the stinger down one hole. the trailer looks to be slightly nose down.

another inch up on the jacks might even things out but you might be light on the rear of the truck already.
