All have compromises.
My main criteria was security followed by headroom and watertight.
I needed it to fit my Honda EU3000 under.
So I chose the Leer 700 hard tonneau. So far it's been perfect.
The drawback is when you want to carry something big like a sofa, it doesn't fit, and I can't imagine removing it.
If I were to start over, I'd consider the "grandpa" topper with much more room under it.....and more weight, and maybe have a slide in the bed.
As far as the 'folding' covers, I'd say Retrax has the best reputation, although pricy.

I found out when traveling as we do, we need some extra room for the "extras". This is an ARE cap with some "no so Grandpa" looks. The dark area is bedliner material.
We also have a full bed slide inside so we do not have to crawl back in there.

Bakflip MX4 - Easy to install, doesn't leak, easy to get into, secure (as secure as they can be), "it just works"

Year's ago I had a small Nissan pickup and I added a cover. It snapped on was made of vinyl, and essentially had no security. But what I found was "no one looked". I kept tools stored back there, and it was never tampered with. Obviously, your location has a lot to do with it, but in a bad location, you may find the entire truck gone or on blocks.
My point being that any cover is better than no cover. Keeping rain off goes a long way.

I can tell you what not to buy... the Peragon covers are junk... next cover will be the Diamondback HD.
Having the extra visibility out the back after having a full snugtop in the past is just too nice to give up. Not to mention the truck has a video rear view mirror with a camera in the third brake light which would also be blocked.

No doubt about it the Aluminum Retrax system with the Yakima HD track rack is my dream cover with all the Overland stuff bolted on! But right now I have Undercover and it looks nice because it's painted to match my truck.

We have a cab high ARE which matches our Tundra. Added opening side windows for access. It is just so nice to have virtually no space limits! Third ARE, fifth Tundra.

I've had the Access roll up tauneau cover on 3 trucks since 2002, and love the versatility, plus, I have a bed high tool box that gets covered as well. Life time warranty. It's been in 125 degrees in Arizona and snow, ice and -35 temps with never an issue. No moving parts to hang up or freeze

Skip the cover and go directly to a Leer cap. I started out with a tonneau cover (trying to save money) and ended up getting a cap less than a year later because some things were too tall to fit under the cover. Would have saved a lot of $$ if I'd just gotten the cap in the first place. Guess it depends on what you want to carry and how much you want to carry. We were full timing so wanted to carry a lot of stuff. While you're at it get a bedslide. Great thing to have and makes getting stuff in and out easier.

I have the the Rough Country tri-fold hard cover on our 20!9 Toyota Tundra Double Cab & love it. Easy to use, easy for one person to remove & put back on (a second person helping makes it a little easier, though.

Another Ditto for a DiamondBack! Strong, easy full access, secure and looks good with the AS! Only minor concern is limited ability to haul kayaks, but maybe enough toys along without them.

I have an Extang Solid Fold (a tri-fold) I really like but at 76 its getting hard to release the rear hold downs. I'm considering getting a new truck soon. What units are easy to fold/retract?

Backflip MX4
My brother has had a Bakflip MX4 for years and he is very pleased with it so I put one on my standard bed F350. Relatively reasonable cost, sturdy construction, but the best thing is the tri-fold versatility. You can use it all the way opened to fully covered, depending on the payload and weather conditions.. Mine also came with an add-on integrated tool box promo which was a nice plus.
Definitely recommend!

I have the Backflip MX4 flip cover - works great. A friend of mine recently put a Leer cap on his. I see that it gives him lots more space, but he has to reach all the way back to get to his stuff. The extra space is appealing but I am not sure I would like to look. That is another issue.
Two questions:
1. what do you do if you have to transport items that are taller than the cap?
2. Did you make the slide out bed yourself or is it available on the market?
Thanks!

Bed Covers
I purchased Ford’s version of the Roll n Loc and love it! I did loose a little space at the cab but have a small space beneath the unit at the cab. It’s water tight and rolls up nicely and was less expensive than the Roll n Loc brand.

Look at Truck Covers USA. Retractable aluminum cover that is powder coated. I've had mine 12 years.

Adding a Cap instead of a Tonneau
I am adding a Cap with a Bedglide to increase storage and security. By getting a higher ceiling height on the cap, I can fit our bicycles in the back and have room for the generators. I like the comment “like a mini garage” from another response. I had Tonneau previously and I needed to remove it when traveling so it was of no use, unless I was taking a small load of yard rubbish to the transfer station. I think with the bedglide it will make the pickup bed very user friendly.

Ditto on the MX4. I had an ARE tonneau on the Titan and loved how it looked on the truck. I never had a problem with security but the major downside was the limitation on using the bed of the truck fully. I had expected to go with it on the GMC but after way too much research and seeing it on a lot of trucks, I went with the BakFlip. Got a screaming dealing when I called RealTruck to ask some details. Install is about as difficult as playing with Legos. The flexibility in bed use has already paid off when I had to move some furniture, which would have been impossible in the old truck without removing the whole cover. Bonus is that the rearview camera mirror still works perfectly with the cover folded up.
