New Airstream owners we have a 2013 Tundra 4WD 5.7 liter engine has been more than adequate for the 25ft. Flying Cloud. Have put it to the test with about 7,000 miles so far in heavy wind and Wyoming terrain.

We tow our 25' with a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L v8. It's my daily driver. We have the Crewmax body (huge back seat, short bed) and Limited trim (leather). The bed has a trifold hard tonneau.
Like others have said, the Tundra mileage isn't good. I have owned and driven about a dozen different brands of cars and trucks. The Toyota products I've owned have been the most reliable and low cost (taking into account purchase price, maintenance, operating cost and especially resale) vechicles I've owned.

We pull our 25fb flying cloud with a 2015 f150 crew cab 2.7 liter ecoboost. We get 24 mpg when not towing (mixed driving 60 percent highway) and have had no issues in the 3000 or so miles we have been towing with it. It has been into the hills of Charlottesville Va and pulls fine. Payload is 1950 and tow capacity is 8200.
I am looking at moving up to a 3500 Gmc in a few years, but that is to allow for loading a motorcycle into the bed when pulling the trailer.

We tow our 25' Flying Cloud with a 2016 Ford F150 with EcoBoost and Max Tow package. Not towing we average 19 MPG (town and highway). While towing we average 12-14 MPG.

We tow our 2015 25FB with a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali 2WD (not the XL, or Suburban equivalent), 6.2 liter gas engine, 8 speed auto, tow package standard. When not towing, we get about 16 mpg average, 20 mpg highway, average 11-12 mpg when towing (relatively flat terrain - have no experience towing in serious hills yet). I'm a bit of a lead foot, so all mileages are based on speed limit+. I do not use the recommended premium fuel (probably give up 15-20 of the rated 420 horsepower!) As a dual purpose vehicle it's hard to beat. As a tow vehicle only, would be nice to have the bed of a pickup for gear but we don't like the added length and wheelbase on a daily basis (when not towing, that is). Also, the 2WD Tahoe/Yukon has a relatively short turning circle, making maneuvering the TV/trailer combo much easier. Couldn't be happier with the combination.

The last time someone asked about the best TV a couple of days ago, the responses got quite heated. I would even say very heated and to me, entertaining. Some people take their opinions a little too seriously. If you can get by the BS, there is some very useful information.
The best solution to the never ending question would be to have a way to test drive some different TV's hooked up to the trailer they are looking at. Of course, that would probably be difficult to accomplish.
Just to keep the heat on, the best TV for an AS 25 and up is a 2500 diesel [of course, that is just my opinion]. Let the fireworks start again!

We use a 2500 HD Chev ..... BUT a 1/2 ton would be adequate. We like the features / safety of a diesel truck as opposed to SUV. Do a search and you will find many different views.

We tow with a 2012 Dodge Durango with a Hemi. Tows great all over the country and is a nice daily driver.

Tow 25" FC with my 2013 Ford F150 4x4 Ecoboost with tow package 36 gal fuel tank, 3.5L engine. 21 mpg on interstate when not towing around 11mpg when towing. Have towed the AS about 4,000 miles thru FL, GA, NC, TN, KY, Ohio, and up and down the Appalachian mountains and have been pleased with my truck's performance. From what i read the only issue you have to watch is load weight.

Was very worried my 5L f-150 would struggle with 27 footer. Think it would in the Rockies, but no problems at all on the east coast. Understand the 6 cylinder is better torque.

Mercedes Benz 350 Bluetec (Diesel, SUV) is what I tow our 25' Safari with. Never a problem with power, and I do a lot of towing at high altitude and in the mountains. Gets 15 to 17 MPG while towing, 27 to 28 MPG on the road without the trailer. Perfect for both duties. Initial price is a little high, but you can plan on keeping it a long time. Be sure it comes from the factory with the tow package.

What do you tow your 25 with? First timer : )
We tow our 88 25' with our 2010 GMC Sierra 5.3 with max tow package with now issues. Love the truck as it is my daily driver when not traveling. Good luck in your search. Prior to this airstream we had a 65 26' Overlander that we towed with a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali 6.0 no issues there either loved that combo too!

2012 Chev Silverado 5.3 with factory tow package. Been just fine through all of the eastern mountains. Normal towing is about 14 mpg on regular; just started using mid-grade based on expert advice.

As a newbie, I'll tell you that I did the same search that you are doing trying to figure out what vehicle to get. There are sooooo many different options and sooooo many different opinions that it becomes pointless after a while to try and figure out what's "best".
My opinion (again, as a newbie who doesn't have a lot of experience pulling 6,000 pounds down the highway) is that my 2015 Ram 1500 Hemi 5.7 feels slightly more stable than the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 eco diesel did (pulling a 4,700 pound 23D). The Jeep had enough power to pull it, but the truck feels better in trying to STOP it.
The Jeep got 27 highway, 22 city, and 12 towing. The Ram gets 20 highway, 17 city, and 13 towing. The Jeep was a far easier daily driver due to much small size and better turning radius. The Ram is more comfortable on long drives because I like the seats better.

If you don't need to haul stuff with a p/u and price isn't a big issue, get a reliable and capable mid-sized SUV. I'm not a big proponent of Dodge due to the less than great reliability record, but the 2016 Durango is an exception. Consumer Reports even gives it a recommended rating for towing. Decent gas mileage and ride, and the price is as good as it gets for that size vehicle, depending on options, of course. Mandatory option is the tow pkg--bigger alternator, trans cooler, wiring, hitch receiver. May even include brake controller--ask, I'm not sure. If not part of pkg, tell dealer to include it, nc. Good luck.

Towing my 25'
Ford F250, crew cab, short bed, 6.7l diesel. Why? 440hp, tow/haul tranny, engine braking, built-in trailer brakes, anti-sway software, 16.5mpg without trailer. Lots of room for people and stuff.
