Upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel

They say the 4X4 will pull 7200lbs. Anyone else interested in this jeep diesel V6?

I think this is ideal for Airstreams such as mine, and a decent daily driver as well.

But if it comes in $15,000 to $20,000 more than than a Ram 1500 with the same power train (due this fall), I would probably choose the pickup.

Personally I would like to see the diesel offered. I might even be tempted to trade in my F150.

No mention of a diesel in the news from the 2013 New York Auto Show

It sounds very similar to my VW Touareg diesel which has been a fantastic tow vehicle/daily driver. I don't even try to argue how good the small SUV with small diesel is because it's too hard to describe the astounding performance without folks thinking your full of it. They tune out when they hear 17 mpg towing because they don't believe it. You really just need to experience it to believe it.

Perhaps the Jeep 3.0 will replace my VW when it hits 400,000 miles in 2020. Diesel rules!

I would actually rather see a diesel offered in the new 2014 Cherokee. That looks like one sweet ride. Tow rateing is currently only 4500 lbs with the V6 gas. Might be a bit higher with a diesel (????).

I am confused. The specs for the link you listed above shows the same drivetrain for the 2013 Cherokee as the 2014 Cherokee- 3.6 V6 and 8 speed tranny. The specs I listed in my previous posting link shows a four cylinder and a 3.2L V6 with a 9 speed tranny. Neither link mentions a diesel.

The GRAND Cherokee will be available with a diesel engine. Production will start in May.
The Cherokee does not come with a diesel. www.jeep.com

Dan you made the initial mistake that I did. Grand Cherokee will have the diesel. Regular smaller Cherokee sadly no diesel - yet.

My mistake. A Cherokee is not a G Cherokee. I did not realize that the Grand Cherokee and the Cherokee are two completely different models. That is why the specs in the two different links don't line up.

Well, it's an easy mistake to make.

Jeep should have given the "Grand" Cherokee a different name. It's not like a different name is so difficult to come up with.

Except that they have a long history of selling both a Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee. I can't say why they did it initially, but I think they may have been ashamed to call the smaller top-line model a Wagoneer (as they had done previously.)

Quoting airstreamguy.com - ** Airstream Lengths, Weights and Tongue Weight
1991 EXCELLA 29 foot, 5600 dry wt, 700 hitch wt

And quoting 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee | Eco Diesel Engine Capabilities | Jeep
When properly equipped, (2014) Grand Cherokee can tow a Best-in-Class+ 7,400-pounds+. Additionally, its Trailer Sway Control (TSC) reduces trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds, traffic and improper weight distribution on the trailer. When an excessively swaying trailer is recognized by the system, the TSC automatically kicks into action.Other features available include: Trailer Tow Group IV.

Any thoughts on this? I *like* Jeep a lot but not sure if I have too big a trailer to pull this off. BTW, Akron and eastern Ohio is hilly!

I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland with the Hemi V8 and tow a 20' Argosy which has a 715 # hitch weight and a 4200# total weight. It is a very nice combination, in all ways, but I am not sure that a 29' would be as comfortable a ride. Maybe, but it would be pushing the limits a bit in my opinion. However, the Jeep GC does weigh in at 5200# itself, so not that far off the trailer weight you would have, what? 3000# less? It is also the length vs the wheelbase of the Jeep which could be a problem.

There are a number of threads regarding the GC and towing, and quite a few differing opinions on how appropriate they are for towing large Airstreams. How ever, from those of us that actually do it, the overwhelming majority love their Diesel Jeep tow vehicles. I am one of those. The Jeep now has about 280,000 k on it, still works beautifully, and I will get a new one as soon as they are available. Jim

Is there a guide to matching up length vs the wheelbase? Any research suggestions?

What I need to find is a vehicle that can tow a few (3-5) times a year and be driven as my main everyday ride. I'm just not comfortable tooling around in a big truck when I don't need one. But....Airstream.....hummmm....

Yep, those of us who've enjoyed the capabilities provided by such a combination can be happy to hear there are more choices coming.

I really hope this Jeep becomes a good seller, because Detroit should look hard at the future of small diesel trucks.

I just tuned in. 17 MPG towing? Do you need to add urea or whatever it is to your diesel? Is it noisy?
