I understand your concern. Below are two posts that have helped guide me...

Some potential consequences of overloads:

and how to calculate "real" towing loads:

We bought a 25 Safari ss and thought our Tahoe would do fine for flat land but even with flat land I never felt completely safe in it. We switched to a 2500 HD Silverado and the first time we towed it I felt so much safer. Now this doesn't give us the license to drive crazy but it gives us a bigger window of safety since the truck weighs more than the Tahoe did and has a longer wheel base. Is it expensive to upgrade yes but in my book the additional safety is like an insurance policy in my mind. Now we aren't limited to where we can go.

PS We plan on having our two Hobie Kayaks with us as well that was also a big reason we didn't just go with a truck that just had a longer wheel base. They are quite a bit heavier than most other kayaks and between those and other things we wanted to take it would put us close if not over on payload on a 1500. We figured we will be keeping this truck for a long time so we went new due to the incentives that were out there and based on what the used diesel ones were going for even just slightly used and just out of the warranty period. Just a couple of thoughts for you
