TT Selection and options

This is what I ordered to tow a GT27 2021 with a PP3 hitch, carrying a measured effective tongue weight of some 1,300#, a bed slider, a 200# generator and all the gear, tools, paddle boards, grill, etc.

Mostly Rockies driving, even in winter when road conditions allow it.

Anyone with experience/knowledge on configuring such that may have input would be appreciated. Originally ordered a 150 but exceeded the payload by a bunch. The wrong truck/configuration is a very expensive mistake, so I am trying to gather all the informed suggestions I can. Thanks.

Hi

Best guess is the door sticker will come in showing a payload around 2,600 to 2,700 pounds. I didn't see the "camper" package on the list. It takes the springs all up to max and gives you a rear sway bar. Pretty cheap for what it does.

Not on topic, but there's a legible "customer email" at the bottom of the pic. I might consider deleting the original from this thread, cropping out any personal info, taking a screenshot of that, and putting that up.

It's the gasser? Trying to imagine that not being enough provided the driver is reasonable.

Tow vehicle

I had a 2019 platinum f150. We traded a 2018 28’ international for a new 2020 30’ classic. The 2018 AS towed awesome w PP3 hitch on the 2019 f150. The new trailer was not exactly perfect but no major issues. We had truck loaded w bbq chairs hard tonneau and two bikes. I upgraded to a 2021 f150 platinum thinking technology would help. It was the opposite and even after disabling the technology it could not tow. We were on a 4000 mile trip talking a lot with Propride to make adjustments and the trailer still threw us around. I ordered a similar 2022 f250 platinum yesterday but did payload downgrade package to 9900 and dropped fx4 and did not op for heavy duty suspension. Luckily used truck prices are up and I got back what I paid for the f150. I will still have over 1000 more payload and 5000 more capacity. I believe they made the new f150 to soft and light to control. It had no problem pulling up steep grades never an issue just hard to keep stable. I have to say driving the new f150 wo a tow is an awesome experience. I love the technology and truck but we bought it to tow. We bought 7.3 gas too based on other recommendations and trying to avoid maintenance we downgraded suspension as much as possible to get a better ride.

Our tongue weight loaded is 850#. Hard to believe the GT is heavier than the Classic. Our 28’ with truck loaded did not have an issue w 2019 f150. Now we have to wait 6-8 weeks for new truck. Get adaptive steering. Good luck

I tow my 28’ with F150 (2020) and PP3. Works great for what I need. But if I was doing mostly mountain driving I would definitely go with at least a 1 ton diesel because of the exhaust brake and lots of payload. A 3/4 ton diesel with that big of a generator might be short on payload.

Ignorance is bliss… My first TT was a FC27 that exceeded the tongue weight limit of the Land Rover LR4 I used as a TV. By 50% Made it 2,000 miles from Lauderdale to Denver, and up and down I70 west to Dillon, plus a steep, curved driveway of some 100 yards to the house, all without incident. Steep grades on the Rockies, strong side wind by Texas, with a generic Blue Ox Swaypro. I remember reading fuel economy on the uphills going down to 4 miles per gallon, still made it. Nevertheless, I go for a F250 now, ditching the F150 whose payload I exceed with my GT27FBT. I am not as ignorant 10 years later so the bliss factor may ran out.

Hi

The other way that works is to fry the transmission at the top of Loveland Pass and then figure out how to roll the whole way into a shop in Denver to get it fixed ( on a Saturday afternoon no less .... very nice folks ).

The best way to show your ignorance is by opening your mouth... So here I go. I have a 25' GT and tow with a RAM 2500 Diesel. The diesel option robs me of about 800 pounds of payload. But we are light travelers. So if you got a gasser with a decent engine so much the better. BUT, the winch package, the slider, the 200 # generator (Honda 7000 iS?) seems like an awfully heavy starting off point for a 250. That PPP hitch (which also came with my GT) is pretty hefty too. Maybe 150#?

Also, are you putting a cap on the truck? More weight. I put a Bakflip tonnau cover on mine and only fill as much as that will allow. Keeps everything dry (trust me, our Florida rain has proven that these last few weeks) and out of sight. Again, my 2 cents, but I have a Champion dual fuel 3400 generator that fits nicely under my cover and provides 30 amps. Yea, I can't run both ACs, but it weighs in around 80 pounds (my wife and I can lift it in).

No judgement zone here. Lot's of spirited discussions on TVs and what does and does not work. Like many others here I've towed trailers way over what the numbers say is safe only because I did not know any better. My tundra was a nice truck, but it did not like towing my 30'tt up mild hills. My RAM just pulls up steep inclines with no issues.

I have no patience to oder anything. That's why we bought our GT off RV trader and picked my truck up off the lot from what was available. If I did have the patience, I would definitely have gone with the 1 ton option for all the goodies you have.

That's a lot of extra weight.

We ordered an almost-identical 2022 F-250. Lariat not Platinum. Less than a year ago we bought the F-150 off the lot.

This time we had to order it because dealers have zero inventory. The dealerships we saw from Texas to Virginia and all across the south look like the love-child of a zombie apocalypse and Grand Theft Auto struck.

It was a tough choice between the F-250 and the F-350 but the truck is our long-distance vehicle even when not towing, and we were concerned about the stiff ride of the F-350 when mostly empty. We don't have the gear of the OP, just the tonneau and whatever we can slip under it (generator, tools, etc.). My bed-sliders are a couple of pieces of heavy-duty cardboard, which come in handy when you need to crawl around under the AS or replace a brake assembly. I hope I don't regret the choice of the F-250 and have to order the F-350 a year from now.
