The first point was that we didn't test Ford’s "Job 2" engine calibrations for the all-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8. The free powertrain software update for 2011 diesel Super Dutys boosts the ratings from 390 horsepower and 735 pounds-feet of torque to an astonishing 400 hp and 800 pounds-feet, eclipsing GM’s 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 rating of 397 hp and 765 pounds-feet. We didn't test the re-rated Ford trucks because they weren’t available at test time."""

What are you reading between the lines? That print can be very small and hard to read....I like to just read the lines and not read too much into anything.

No Sir! Current Powertrain but not with current power upgrade.
Please read my quote in the 2nd post,,,from the article you posted.
Again, not a fair real world test.
Craziness. Any one of us would pull that much weight up that hill and down at a safe and comfortable speed, probably 4th gear and 45-50 mph, and keep an eye on the temps and fuel economy. Then, it's back to 65-70 for comfortable cruise. Heck, maybe 3rd gear and 40mph. I don't know. It's a random circumstance that few will ever do and I hope nobody actually races to see how fast they can go up that hill.

That was a very interesting read. I guess I've always leaned toward the GM Trucks even though I own 2 Ford cars. Between this test and the Trailer Life Magazine shootout of the 3/4 tons, it looks like Chevy is walking away with all the honors.
I am researching a new tow vehicle right now, and have narrowed it down to the Ford and Chevy. The Dodge just isn't up to what I plan to carry and tow. I'm shopping for a pop-up truck camper to put in a long bed single rear wheel diesel 1 ton and still pull Lucy at 7400# with a 1000# tongue weight.. The truck camper will go a little over 3000#. This will be a big load. I don't wan any disappointments with a new tow vehicle.
This test pushes me hard in the Chevy direction. The lack luster performance of Ford's engine brake system is a major negative for me. Chevy's engine braking function sounds miles ahead. We do a lot of mountain towing. The last thing that I want is to smell the brakes as I am careening downhill with 20,000+# of truck, camper, and Airstream.

We agreed with a few conditions: Chevrolet had to use test trucks purchased off the lot from Chevy and Ford dealers and the Super Duty had to have the 400/800 power ratings
|
The test was with the up-date on the Ford.

BTW,.........Quoted from another site.....
"I did a little calculating and came up with some numbers which might explain the percieved difference in exhaust brake performance that was reported in the " Rumble in the Rockies" test. Considering the fact that GM chose the location and set up the parameters of the test it is not surprising that the results are what they are. Taking into account the different gear ratios and tire diameters of the two trucks, this is what I discovered. The GM down shifted into 2nd gear allowing the engine to rev to a comfotable 3570 rpm. This rpm pumped enough air through the exhaust brake to produce the necessary "negetive HP" that when multiplied by the gear ratio of 1.81 the truck was under control. At 50 mph in the Ford, if the transmission would have shifted into second, the engine would have reved to 5108 rpm. So it remained in 3rd where the engine was reving at 3350 rpm and not pumping enough air through the exhaust brake to create the necessary "negetive HP", when multiplied by the third gear ratio of 1.52 to keep the truck under control. With a little lighter load on the same hill the Ford may have felt more comfortable than the Chevy. I think it is more about gear ratios than exhaust brakes - and most about who was instigating the test. "

Brian, I know you wanted to stick w/SRW for off-road...the 1 ton GM SRW have the greatest GVWR for SRW...you will be heavy with your full setup.
Check it out...can't go wrong with the D/A...
I hope the new Ford does better than the last couple of gens...time will tell...the rest of the truck is very nice...the verdict is still out on the new power train.

There's a decent bunch on the truck camper sub-forum at RV.Net for yet more context and experience. That's a helluva load contemplated.
