Remember the "55 mph" days? Each 5 mph increment over that typically decreases fuel economy about 10%.

I know our diesel could pull the trailer faster than I care to even ride a motorcycle. On a straight and empty highway out here, I ran her up to 80 just to see what it was like. No thanks for me.

The Lie-o-Meter fuel economy was around 5 mpg. I got 12.3 on the return trip from the Ballon Festival even going through the mountains by staying at 65 mph maximum on I-40 or the lower posted speed limits on the other roads.

The Gold Wing could hit close to 39 mpg at 60 mph and close to 25 mpg at 80 mph on I-10 in Texas (the posted speed limit between El Paso and San Antonio).

Speed reduces one's ability to react in time and eats fuel faster. An old engineering maximum is that to double the speed takes 4x the power which equates with a lot more fuel being consumed.

Well, I brought home the 30' International this weekend, driving the 200+ miles home. I got about 17.2 mpg on the way there, doing 65-70mph.
I got only 9.8 mpg on the way home doing 60-65, though we did crawl along at 5mph for almost an hour trying to pass an accident on the Baltimore Beltway. It even creeped up to 70mph at one point when I wasn't paying close attention to my speed. I know the trailer is back there, but the 5.7L Tundra still pulled it without complaint.
Rev's on tachometer were obviously a bit higher and I was using "TowHaul" mode like recommended in manual. Could probably not use that if on flat country, but the rolling hills of MD didn't allow that. Engine temp. appeared exactly the same.
I figure that if I dropped down to 55-60mph, I should get 10-12 mpg.

I am using the same hitch as my 25" trailer the Reese High Performance Trunnion Weight Distributing Hitch (1,200 lbs). I know the trailer is back there, but the 5.7L Tundra still pulled it without complaint.

It's amazing how much your foot / driving style changes the MPG equation.

I've managed both 13.2mpg and a horrible 9 mpg.

My personal goal for myself is to keep my driving in a place where it stays above 12.5 without having to spend all my time thinking about my foot or annoying the people behind me.

My best mpg leg was between Lafayette, LA and Mobile AL on I10 driving about 60mph; 12.9 (calculated by hand) when refueling outside Mobile. 2010 Tundra Double Cab/AS Classic 25fb.

I got near 13 mpg towing across I-20 across Louisiana from Vicksburg, MS to Tyler, TX. That is the best I've ever got and the lowest fuel prices in 9-10 years. Win, win.

That is true for me, every 5mph above 58 I loose 1mpg.

This good fuel economy was at about 61 mph.
