Toyota Sequoia & Towing

Hi Alex,

We have a 19' Bambi and tow with a Toyota Sequioa V8, and want to upgrade Airstream to at 25'. Are we pushing the limits?

Thanks,
John

Hi John. It depends on what year your Sequoia is. We have the 2008 model with the larger 5.7 L V8 with a rated towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. I would not have chosen a model with the smaller V8 as a towing vehicle for a 25' safari, but that is my opinion. The article Gary posted is interesting, but I would worry about having sufficient margin.

I have the 08' Sequoia 5.7 liter and you can tow a 28 foot no problem. I pulled are friends 05 safari to Zion NP and back to colorado, over the mountains. stable, no sway, easy to stop. over the passes at 70+

We normally tow our 68' 28 foot ambassador. It's about 2000 lbs lighter dry weight of 4400 I think. I don't even know it's back most of the time.

You don't need a truck to tow big. But if you don't need the inside space, like we did, I would go with a truck. Why not.

We have kids and dog and need the space inside. have to seat more than 5 comfortable . Plus it is our everyday driver and no matter what people say. the trucks don't ride as nice.

So, People will have there input but I have towed over 3000 miles this past summer with a 28' trailer behind it and I love the way it handles.

I have a 06 Infiniti QX56 that handles very well so far towing an 04 25 Classic. On the Interstate Rds. I usually cruise at 70 - 75 MPH. without any problems. I'm using the Reese anti sway bar set up. Have been told by friends following in back she tracks straight as an arrow with no sway what so ever. I've put about 2,500 miles on so far with this set up.

19' yes...but I feel 25' is pushing it. The issue isn't power...it has it as does nearly any 5.7L.

We have a 2008 Sequoia and are picking up a new 25' Safari in May. Have you done anything to your mirrors or are the ones on the vehicle adequate?

Here is something worth taking a look at as it makes good sense:

RV Towing Tips - How long?

Sequoia, based on it's wheelbase should have not much more than 23'.

For many years one of my pals has been towing a 30' SOB with his Sequoia.

He is very fussy with the handling and performance and wouldn't put up with any negative issues.

The Hensley hitch and reinforced factory receiver is part of the success story.

That really does go a long way for me knowing there is someone crazier that I am out there doing something really smart.....just what is it with the Canadians anyway towing these big rigs with matchbox cars (though I admit, I would rather see a Sequoia than a Dodge Intrepid towing a 30 or 34 footer..)? I just don't get it, and perhaps I never will fully understand how a hitch and a beefed up hitch can overcome the daunting weight ratio differences of a huge trailer with small tow vehicle. Who knows, maybe we're the crazy ones for having a 130" wheelbase and a 3/4 ton truck to pull 7000lbs and 26' feet worth of trailer.

The Sequoia is a very comfy vehicle—like the old family sedan on steroids. We had a 2002 one and it was great to travel in, but we didn't have a trailer then.

As a tow vehicle for a 25', I am unsure of whether it has the payload you will need. The 25' Safari/Flying Clouds have a GVWR of 7,000 to 7,300 lbs., a lot more than purman's trailer. We tow with an '07 Tundra and we have barely enough payload to provide a safety margin of around 10%. SUV's usually have less payload than pickups and have tendency to get loaded with more things. I would guess the Sequoia weighs about 1,000 lbs. more than the Tundra and that means it has to come out of payload. The Sequoia has a suspension made for that comfy ride rather than towing heavier trailers like the 25's.

I expect you can tow a 25' with a Sequoia and it'll feel fine. But the wear and tear on the vehicle will eventually show up—suspension, transmission, engine—and won't be cheap.

If you have the 4.7L V8, I think you will also be on the weak side on power. The 5.7 L has about 50% more HP.

Check your owner's manual for payload and how to calculate your situation, then check the Forum on that issue.

The specs as Toyota publishes do appear to be able to tow larger trailers upward of 9100lbs, but I have yet to see what they put into these beasts to be able to make these claims unless they are talking about 9000lb 23' trailers.

If you recall the Nissan Armada way back when, they boosted the trailer capacity by adding a trans cooler, calling it "the big tow" package....that rating was bumped by about 2000lbs just with something like that.

The 5.7L Sequoia has a 381hp 5.7L, but my Impala SS had similar numbers too and power numbers alone do not a tow vehicle make and I had a 118" when I first started towing my 25er. The difference in stability between my SS pulling and my Burb is just night and day....and yer right Gene....my rear body bushings had issues with all that "extra" hitch weight. It was only rated for about 550-600lbs.....I put a few hundred more lbs of hitch weight. In my case the drivetrain was far up to it, but the flex and the beating was to much for the frame and body mounts, which is why it only had a 5000lb rating, no matter what I did with gears, trans, engine, suspension.....of course the Sequoia's frame is prob just a bit more beefy than say a sedan.

My experience was pulling a 34' tri-axle with a 7,000 lb V10 Excursion. The Excursion was just barely enough tow vehicle for the 8,900 lb trailer. I have an '07 Titan now... with the Big Tow package and a 9,400 lb tow rating. It weighs a little more than half what the Excursion weighed... after towing with the 3/4 ton Excursion rated at 10k lbs, I doubt I'd ever try to tow more than about 6k lbs with it.

What's the payload capacity of each? Tongue weight (weighed, not the published empty wt) + driver + passenger + cargo in the TV cannot exceed the payload capacity of the TV -- or else emergency maneuvers may not function as the engineers designed. That's navigating off the map IMO.

Payload capacity = GVWR minus curb weight.
Tongue weight = 11-13% of trailer gross weight (cannot be rigged to be less or very unstable tow results)

Using finalcutjoe's figures:
Burb_____________________________________Sequoia
2273 # ____________ Payload ______________ 1000 #

That's not enough Sequoia payload capacity to be practical. The SUV cab does add extra weight over the Tundra's pickup box.

I love my '06 Sequoia with the 273HP 4.7liter V8. It pulls my '67 Globetrotter like a dream. I am planning on upgrading with a TRD catback system to get a little more HP and torque (plus that sweet sound). Having now towed my GT about 1000 miles with the Sequoia I can honestly say that I wouldn't want to tow anything much heavier than about 5000# with this vehicle (even though it is rated to 6500#). I just don't like putting too much strain on the drivetrain. I know that this thread is really more about the latest generation of Sequoia, but I had to chime in since I think the last generation is soooo much better looking (FLAME ON )

No flames from me! The 4.7L Sequoia is about the only SUV I'd consider replacing my Yukon with. If only those darned Toyota's weren't so expensive, even used!

DEpends on year and drive config.

2007 4X4 rated for 6200 # towed load - same year 4X2 = 6500 #'s

Different year may be diff results. Same goes for the A/S. They were built heavier as the newer model came out.
