Towing an Airstream With a Touareg
Is there anyone out there towing an Airstream with a 2011 VW Toureag? If so, what unit are you towing, are you using any type of weight distribution or anti sway equipment? And more importantly, are you concerned that VW specifies no larger than a 2" tow ball is to be used as well as no additional equipment such as weight distribution, etc.?Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Before the masses chime in, tell us which Touareg you own. V6 gas, V6 diesel or V6 hybrid?

Firrst, do a search for Touareg here and sort through all of the contradicting opinions. But in a nutshell the newer TDI6's are best adapted to 23' or less. You can go longer, but you may exceed your max hitch weight and power capacity on long grades. You can use a weight distributing hitch, although VW says otherwise. It is a German manufactured car and they have different standards in Europe. The factory hitch is overbuilt and can handle the actual 770lb rating and then some (VW will send you a replacement sticker if you want one).
Over 40,000 miles towing with a V8 and V10TDI with a 19' Bambi and a 25' FB and no problems from the flats of Florida to the highest passes in the Rockies.
OK, the non-Touareg owners can now chime in....

Does anyone know what kind of AS & tow vehicle that AS Life Magazine publisher Rich Luhr uses? I heard it was some kind of Mercedes but not sure about the AS.
Thanks!

What is troubling is VW's stating that no larger than a 2" diam ball be used. Air Streams require 2-5/16".VW won 't change their position on this.

Why would you want to tow an Airstream Motorhome with a VW?
Unless this thread would be better in the Tow Vehicle section for Trailers...

Haven't heard that one. But then the manual says "If you plan to tow a trailer, please remember that your car will be performing a service for which it was not intended."
There are also mentions regarding the use excessive speed.
So why did they build V10 diesels with factory mounted tow hitches that can do 170mph and tow a 747?
Your car will not care what size ball it is towing with... only the weight and size of the towed vehicle matters.
