Towing a 22FB with a Lexus GX 460

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and have read a little bit on this topic already, but am looking for my information/feedback. I am getting ready to purchase my first Airstream, a 2015 22FB, and I am planning on pulling it with my 2018 Lexus GX 460. The tongue weight of the trailer is 500 lbs and the GX is rated to 700.

Can anyone who tows something similar with their GX chime in and provide their thoughts and direction?

Thanks!

Congrats on the 22FB! We have a 2019 Sport 22FB and it is big enough and also small enough.

Our 2019 has a published tongue weight of 422 lbs and we are seeing it around 500 lbs with stuff in it, with our tongue scale. It sounds like the Lexus should work out great.

Hello, greetings from central Kentucky and welcome to the forum.

I pull our 23' Safari with a 2004 4Runner SE which has the 4.7 L V8 and full time 4WD. Tongue capacity is the same, 700 lbs. and towing capacity is 7,000 lbs. The AS owners manual says the dry weight of the AS tongue is 600 lbs. However, using my tongue scale, with stuff we always keep in the AS and 1 bottle of propane full, I find that the weight is 730 lbs. So actual tongue weight is higher when you have your gear in it. Your WD hitch will move some of the weight onto the front wheels and the AS wheels.

I use an Equalizer hitch and have been pulling it since 2014 without any problems, the rig is very steady and easy to pull the AS. I've had a couple of panic situations (people suddenly coming into my lane) and the 4Runner did quite well. You should be fine.

Actually, the 2018 GX460 has a rated payload between 980-1280 lbs, depending on your options. And has a listed towing limit of 6,500 lbs for year 2018. The 2020 GX towing limit has been increased by Lexus to 7000lbs. You should be fine towing with the 22FB trailer and using a weight distribution hitch.

Should tow great.

As any tow vehicle, overall rig setup is important. Potentially even more important with a relatively short wheelbase, long overhang, and softly sprung suspension.

Keep the tow ball as close and tight to the rear bumper as possible. Even modifying the drop hitch by cutting off any extraneous horizontal projection and re-drilling a hitch pin hole. This dimension is probably the singular most critical geometry in the overall setup as it minimizes trailer tongue weight and sway influence on the tow vehicle. You've heard of long wheelbase as good for towing stability - it's really about wheelbase to rear overhand (rear axle to ball distance) ratio. As the GX has about a 2:1 wheelbase to rear overhang ratio, every inch the ball is closer to the rear bumper has the same perceived effect of a 2" longer wheelbase.

Second most important aspect is to have enough weight distribution (WD) tension in your setup. 50%-75% front axle weight restoration (FALR) is appropriate for a robust, relatively short, and softly sprung vehicle like the GX.

After that, enjoy!
