Thank you for all the great information and advice. I will make sure my TV is properly equipped and will look into other options for the time being.

I will not have the jeep nor the trailer packed to the max. Part of the reason I am taking this route is to shed all the unnecessary **** I have accumulated over the years and only take with me what I need. I will be taking the trip slow and have no specific date that I will make it to CA. When i find places I vibe with, I will stay there until it's time to go and check out the next spot.

Gear ratio is 3.73. Tires/rims are after market, M/T, stock size, no lift. Jeep has 16k miles on it. Has a Class II reciever, trailer Tow w/4-Pin Connector Wiring which I will have to replace

This is you right here, 2015 JKUR towing 20ft 66 GT (3000lbs) Equilizer hitch was not adjusted in this pic but you get the idea. The D44 rear end you have was previously rated to pull 5000 lbs on an XJ or MJ, all the searching I did suggested your weak point may be cooling. Pulling that on flat land the computer showed the Jeep getting 14 mpg and it only gets about about 15.5 around town normally, indicating it's not stressing the vehicle. Make sure you have an equalizer and the trailer brakes are hooked up and working, the Rocky Mtns are a different animal than anything we have on the East Coast. Enjoy the ride.

What equalizer did you use? Trailer brakes are working. My brother towed it home with his excursion no problem. I have a brake controller coming in the week for my Jeep.

That's just a generic one you can order anywhere. It came from Redneck Trailer Supply (yes, that's the correct name, and it a big business). I have an original Airstream equalizer hitch that came with my 66 Overlander, but I'm not that fond of that one. The hitch and the trailer brakes are the key to pulling this off for you. Get the rig as level as possible. If you weren't going across the Rockies I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'd plan my trip with the least grades possible.

2018 JKU with my ‘61 Overlander I just hooked up. The trailer is light and minimal WD on the bars brought the front end back to unloaded height, the back is 3/4” below unloaded height. I still plan on shortening the shank 3” and reinforcing the hitch for more weight transfer. If it tows ok I will re-gear to 3.73 or 4.11

My first trailer was a new 24 foot Argosy and I pulled it with a 78 Jeep Cherokee Chief with a 390 engine. Big tires, brakes, etc. It was wonderful. I pulled my Argosy around the USA for several months without a problem but it was built for that weight.

I'm not commenting on the ability (or inability) of a Jeep JL Unlimited to safely (or legally) tow the OPs specific trailer, but If you're just talking specs the JLU is far better suited than your old 78 Cherokee Chief. The JLU has nearly 100 more HP, a 10" longer wheelbase, weighs almost exactly the same, and has 12.9" front and 13.4" rear disc brakes, compared to the 11" front rotors and 10" rear drums on your SJ. The times have changed.
