Tow Vehicle Tires

I saw several threads on trailer tires but could not find any on TV tires.

What is everyone running? Good and bad experiences?

I am less than pleased with the Goodyear tires that came from the factory on my F-250. There is a slight shimmy in between 70-77 mph. It smooths out around 79 but, I don't like to run that fast.

I took the truck back to the dealer and they re-balanced the tires. It did not help any and maybe made it slightly worse. The shimmy is not terrible but, you can feel it on a smooth road. I am really thinking about replacing them with a set of Michelin and selling the Goodyear.

Cheers,
Wooly

My 2019 F350 came with Michelins (20” wheels). I never felt any vibration in the steering. You might want to go to a different shop before you switch tires.

My 2019 F350 came with Goodyear Wranglers. I have had no shimmy. I think the tires ride pretty good. The truck has 31k miles. I measured the tires last week. They still have 5/32 of tread. I have no complaints with the tires. Matter of fact, I have a set of take offs complete with wheels, caps, nuts, and TPMS sensors waiting to put on when I wear out the originals.

As far as steering problems go, I have had a episode with "death wobble". The dealer replaced my steering stabilizer.

Falken Wildpeak AT, 37-12.5 R18 on my RAM Cummins 2500 diesel.
Great on-road, off-road & towing. No shimmy or death-wobble at high speeds. Love them.

BFG TA/KO2 with DT thread compound.

They are awesome. Quiet. Supple ride. Very durable sidewall. Deep tread blocks. Good in snow. Very versatile tire. Couldn’t be happier.

DT variant is designed for 3/4 ton+ trucks. Has a slightly harder compound for longer wear. Great for off-road as well.

For my tire size (34.2”) and load (4,500lb per axle when not towing) I run about 35psi when in the backcountry, 55psi all 4 corners when not trailering. Raise to 65-70 on the rear axle with the trailer is in tow.

I just installed a set of Wrangler LT tires on my 3/4-ton Suburban. So far so good, and they fixed the vibration that was there previously.

Did the new stabilizer fix the death wobble? Or is it too soon to tell?

Too soon to tell. I just had the repair done about 2 weeks ago.

Ive heard that's what the dealers do re: death wobble. Its interesting that there are a few other approaches that some independents recommend

This outfit in Buford, GA (Powerstroke Help) advocates changing the caster angle. Search YouTube for the video. Others simply point to worn or loose front end components as the culprit. I think the idea is that once you experience death wobble, there's accelerated wear on other front end components which leads to.... more death wobble.

I hope you're new stabilizer fixes it. Please keep us posted.

I had some Firestone Transforce AT tires on my truck. They were very smooth, wore evenly but when they hit 50% they were slick in wet weather. They are a 40k mile tire. The price was right when I bought them.
Three weeks ago I put on a set of Michelin AT2 tires. They sing a bit on the highway but not obnoxious.
I also have Centramatic balancers on the truck and I believe these help with tire wear and smoothness.

Update on Factory Goodyear Tires

Update:

As I said earlier, I took the truck back to the dealer to have the tires balanced. They took the wheels off, gave them and spin, and then came back and said "Yep, they are good. They are within spec." So they blew me off.

Well after a couple thousand more miles, I took the truck to a Discount Tire in Conroe, TX. They found 2 of the tires were out of balance by over 3.0 ounces, and one more out by 2.5 ounces. Hardly within "spec".

Discount charged me $40 to rebalance and this did a world of good. It still did not completely get rid of the shimmy and whop whop gong down the road. I spoke to several experienced techs for a good while and they said that this was about as good as it will get with these tires. I believe them.

Hated to do it but I swapped the tires for a set of Michelin LTX A/T 2
LT275 /70 R18 125R
E1. Totally night and day difference. From what I was told, these tires come on the King Ranch, Lariat, and Platinum models but not the XLT and down.

I will never again own anything that says Goodyear on it. I spend 99.9% of my driving on the road. You probably do as well. Tires must be round and must balance. It will be Michelin from here on out.

They are spoken for already. They would make a good off road tire where a super aggressive tread was not required. I don't think you would be happy with them at highway speeds.

The funny thing is, I have had Goodyear Wranglers in the past that were fine. These were not. They said "Made in USA" on the sidewall. Michelin's do as well.

I replaced the stock Bridgestones off my Tundra since they wore rapidly; replaced them with Michelin Defenders and they're great.

I would have made a warranty claim with Goodyear on those tires since it's a brand new truck.

Michelin Tires on my 2016 King Ranch F350 Diesel

[QUOTE=Woolecox;2551242]Update:

*****

The heavy Airstream lengths have these 16 inch Michelins as stock.

The heavy Ford F250/350's have 18 inch Michelins as stock.

WHY? Guess....

You will replace the REAR Tow Vehicle's Michelins before the Front tires. We have 71,000 miles on our 2016 F350. The front tires have minimal wear. The rear tires were about 50%. I replaced them last month.

Those on our 27FB... still lots of tread and maybe never be worn out... but will rot out in the distant future.

Some want to convince us that Michelin Tires are damaging the trailer. Yes that is true. You will spend more time towing, than replacing tires and fixing the damages a blow out will create. Buzz Offffff.. If I had any problems with Michelins, I sure would not be buying them since 2014 on our Trailers.

Common Sense is learned by experience, NOT by being passive and READING about tires, but using them and by use. I am not selling Tires.

When the Rear Tires are at 50%, I will then replace all Four Tires . I rotated the spare and replaced with the new tire mounted.

If people want SNOW Tires on their tow vehicle... I do not care. Colorado Mountains... great. Phoenix... noisy and poor traction on hard surfaces....

If people believe that 16 inch Michelin Tires on the Airstream and Michelin Tires on the Tow Vehicle are BAD. Marathons... were great too... until they were not.

When we go to Sell our F350 or 27FB Airstream... we will get top dollar. Why? Because we learned to be smart... not from others preaching to us... but from experience.

"It is better to have done something wrong and learned, than to have done nothing... and succeeded."

With the dealer claiming they were "within spec", I saw no point going after a warranty claim. Believe me, the thought crossed my mind.

I cut my losses and moved on.

Any brand tire can develop problems which cannot be balanced out. Hit a pothole wrong and trouble can start inside the tire leaving things looking normal on the outside but vibrating going down the road.

I just replaced a nearly new set of tires on our TV due to a shimmy at 62-65 mph. They were balanced, with no help. I took them to have a Road Force balance done, and was then told that there were was some belt shifting which made them unbalanceable. A myriad of things could have caused this, ranging from manufacturing defect to hitting a pothole or curb.

In my experience driving it really doesn't matter the brand as long as it's a reputable top-tier company. There is still a chance for problems - no brand is immune from them.

The operative words here "road force", balancing without a load on the tire leaves a bit on the table.
A structure failure can go unnoticed without pressure on the tread.
