Read the Last Paragraph FIRST... then make a decision to keep reading.
We could have spent our lives, living out of a Toyota Land Cruiser and tent camping. The great 'could go anywhere' getting IN and also getting OUT of any camp site combination.
Airstream Travel Trailers also come in different sizes. If you have not already discovered.
Your first Airstream can quickly become too small, as is the next, etc... Maybe get the largest FIRST, which should have been the original plan. Then decide to downsize, as you learn hauling too much of unnecessary junk, that has been removed by now and now have... too much space. Also can tow with a lighter, more manageable tow vehicle.
The 'resale' of your too large Airstream to an undersized Airstream owner... may be the ‘Gold at the End of the Rainbow’ you have heard about. Get what you should have purchased the first time... but now tested, unblemished shorter model. The down grade/ up grade opportunity for two interested parties, may recover most of your original... and their previous investment.
I became old at 56 and finally decided: “Why show off to the youngsters under 50, that we could go anywhere in a 4x4 and a Tent”? Three Blue Heelers also, easily fit, into any empty space. Tow Vehicle or Tent.
We went from a 23 foot to a 25 foot to a 27/28 foot Airstream... Bigger was Better. Trailer AND Tow Vehicle. Most do not understand if you tow a larger travel trailer, you should also consider a larger, yet modest, Tow Vehicle. A point often ignored.
Then added an Oliver Elite II which is almost as heavy as a 27FBQ Airsteam, maybe 800 pounds. Also 7 feet less interior space in the Oliver but ahhhhhfully nice for our camping.
If you are a Big Spender for anything larger than a 25 foot Airstream or some slapped together some other brand... you will need a BIGGER, better Tow Vehicle. So what if you also need the vehicle to drive to work. In the Rocky Mountains... you need a 4x4, often, to GET to Work and Home anyways.
Cannot afford a 'good' Tow Vehicle, but can afford a new or late model 30 foot Airstream? Hmm... Be happy you are not a Pilot of a small aircraft. If you are a pilot of a small aircraft with a limited budget, do not ask me to go for a short flight. I have seen those photographs in Cheyenne, Wyoming, when light aircraft crashes are investigated.
Seeing someone's head sticking through the plastic windshield of a light aircraft does get your attention.
A Toyota Tundra will pull about anything with the 5.7L 4x4 double cab. As you get a heavier trailer, things begin to change. Like pulling away from a Stop Sign, to stopping for a Red Light or braking down one of Colorado’s finest Passes can be an eye opener.
Wagons in the Mid 19th Century also had options. Horse or Oxen. More pulling and more to pull... add more livestock. Those who cut corners, but added a pump organ and lots of heavy ceramic plates and pottery into the wagon... may have tossed most into the Desert before arriving near or at California.
I began towing with a 2006 Toyota 4x4 4.7L engine a 23 foot Safari. I 'evolved' and bought the second year of the larger Tundra 5.7L 4x4. And later used it to tow a 25 foot International. Border line for tongue weight, but towed as fast as I needed to go.
Getting the last of the previous years’ model Ford’s F350 4x4 Diesel, attached to a 27FBQ was an excellent match. The other pickups on the lot were left overs for the prevous year were F250 gas 4x4’s, white and for construction customers...
IF you live in the Flat Lands of the central plains of the USA... do whatever you find comfortable. You should have read this first. Anyone knows an Ending of a Trailer and Tow Vehicle Monograph will always has a ‘twist in logic’. This was the caveat.
