Tacoma and 20 FT Flying Cloud

2019 Toyota Tacoma has a tow capacity of 6800 lbs.

20 ft Flying Cloud has a GVWR of 5000 lbs.

Anyone use this set up?

OK for cross county travel?

Brake controller suggestions?

Weight distribution hitch suggestions?

Thanks for your input.

Excellent TV-trailer match. With properly set up weight distribution it's very stable up and down hills at highway speed. We've traveled from Virginia to Maine, lots of hills and mountains, power has never been an issue.

As pictured with canoe, rack, bikes, two adults and one dog, the GVWR of the truck is about maxed out, though the front and rear GAWRs are well under their limits. The rear axle, is 400 lbs. under and the front is even more.

I use a Reese Dual Cam hitch with 800 lb. bars. The previous owner had 600 lb. bars but IMO those were a bit too light with the Tacoma. I have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller, works fine.

What is the payload capacity? Tongue weight plus the weight of the occupants and gear in the truck has always been the limiting factor to consider with any Toyota truck.

We towed our 19’ Bambi across the Rockies to Utah and back, with our Tacoma. No problems at all. You won’t be the fastest going up the mountain, but that’s about 1% of the journey. (And the Tacoma even does a respectable job pulling up the passes). We went to a 23 later, so we switched to a Tundra.
