Should I keep my Tow Vehicle... or,

... should I sell it during this seller's market.

We have had inquiries to sell from several truck dealers. We have two potential TVs - both equipped with HD tow packages. We only drive a few miles per year and did not get the AS out at all last year due to covid constraints... may not get out until the end of the season this year either. One is a 2019 Silverado 1500 with 1800 miles and the other is a 2020 Expedition that just turned 3500 miles. We like the Expy with our dogs

What say you folks from the more active vehicle markets?

Just traded our 2009 f150 crewcab for a 2020 Expy with HD tow pkg.pulls our 2014 FC 25' with ease

If you plan to keep one I recommend keeping the Expy. Even if you don't tow any more, you will still have a great travel vehicle that can tow like a truck but ride like a car.

I think you would get more $ for the pickup. I personally tow with a pickup but that’s just what I prefer. If the Epxd. suits you then fine. Here in the Deep South, a gently used late model pickup can’t be found, and if you do find one you pay more than what it would sell for new because new ones don’t exist either. They are all on back order. If you do sell, make sure you get as much as much as you can because it should bring it.

To me, one consideration is
When you travel with the trailer, is there anything you need to pack in the Truck that you would not want in the passenger compartment of the SUV??
i.e. Generator, gas cans, etc??

other than that, it seems that you are using the SUV more than the truck -- that is an indication right there.

I think it's a question that only you can answer. The perfect tow vehicle for one person may not be acceptable for another person.

I've had multiple calls from local dealers offering to buy my Sierra Denai 1500. I could get a really great trade for it right now, but then of course I'd have to buy something else. New HD truck inventory is very low, and discounts are not common. I'm likely going to stick with my current truck for a few more years, despite the temptation to profit in a seller's market.

Keep them both. Sure, you will get a good price right now but it is difficult for me to see that you can replace one in the future.

Hi

Only you can answer the question.

If indeed one of the vehicles is no longer needed, yes, this is a good time to sell it. The fact that this is a good time should *not* get into the decision about the vehicle no longer being needed.

If one of the two meets all your needs, that's great. Which one that is might be a pick you would make differently than some of the rest of us. That's also great. I would make very sure that the weight limit numbers are met on a CAT scale before I made any assumptions about either vehicle being ok for towing long term.

Another option is to trade in *both* vehicles on something new. That opens up all sorts of possibilities. New vehicle prices have not gone nuts (yet). Wait times are insane, but ok. You might give them one vehicle when you place the order and the other one when the new vehicle arrives. You still have something to drive around while you wait.

Lots of choices !!!

used prices surely make one think

I just traded the DW's explorer with 11K miles for one three years newer for not much money. Could have done even better if I had sold it myself. Salesman said this is likely the apex, as they are seeing some downward trends.

If you want to get cash for one or both and see what happens by next towing season, it might be the perfect time to maximize your sales prices and have enough on hand to replace one next spring with a spiffy left-over 2022 model and all it's newfangled electronics, if that floats your boat.

Otherwise, your current vehicles will certainly decline in value, but who cares if you are using them.

I have a 2000 Ford Excursion. Just replaced engine and transmission with Ford remanufactured.
For us, we have always had an SUV. The Ex is not as ideal as a tow vehicle as an F-350, but it does so many other things well, like haul 8 people or plywood sheets.

Thanks for the input, but, ...
My question was would this be an optimum time to sell one of our tow vehicles ... we do NOT want to trade in or keep both ...

My 3 cents:
NOW is the time to sell one of them and personally I would sell the Silverado.

Hi

Ok, that narrows it down. If you don't want to keep both, then the answer is simple: Yes this is the optimum time to sell one of them.

Hi

Top price is always going to be from sell it yourself to a new buyer. That can be a bit of a hassle. Craig's List is one way to do DIY car / truck sales.

Carvana

If you don’t want the hassle of selling it yourself- check out Carvana. Sold my 2020 Ram 1500 in February for more than I bought it for last July. Carvana beat Kelly Blue Book by over $2k.

we have had good luck selling to Carmax a couple of times and have sold several vehicles privately. For private sales, have usually advertised on Autotrader.com and Cars.com. If you don't need both, now is a good time to sell.

Like you said , it is a sellers market! This could change at any time with politics. If you are asking this question it sounds like you really want to sell both.
