I used a Blue Ox for 15,000 miles or so. I know exactly what you're talking about. The design could have been better... It works and I was able to find a formula with a combination of jacking up the trailer and tow vehicle and a nicer breaker bar with good leverage and clearance from the trailer and tank cover. The ratchet and nylon strap alternative is a much better design.

I ended up switching to a different hitch, not because of this issue but to get something even easier on the trailer than the blue ox tension bars. Perhaps you will settle into something that works for you.

What’s the ratchet and nylon strap alternative? On a Blue Ox? You’ve got my attention.

An Aftermarket seller. Not Blue Ox. Many people here swear by it. Saw it at a campground once and I have to say it was nice. Never did buy them myself.

https://www.amazon.com/Lippert-33585.../dp/B00JJZ3T7S

The only thing that stopped me was the price at $160, I figured I'd just keep using the breaker bar.

I have a dent in the aluminum front storage compartment door. The one time I left it down when unhitching. Those chains have a lot of tension on them. This strap system looks great. Hopefully it’s durable, not sure why it wouldn’t be. Works with the same forces, I guess it should. And I could get equal tension on the straps, I guess just by measuring, or marking the strap somehow.
Thank you. I never knew there was an alternative. The hitch has worked well for 11,000 miles so far. No sway, certainly less expensive than a new hitch system especially the PP.

Hmm, the Amazon reviews mention a lot of quality issues with the ratchet assembly. I was ready to order a set. Not sure now.

Thanks GettinAway.

I ordered the heavy duty version. I have a couple of inches of garage head room above the cab.

Please post back here your thoughts after the install. All I can say is, it works.
