Arrow Newbie Tow Vehicle Question: Ford Expedition

Hey there! New to the forums, but trying hard to make good choices. Please weigh in on the following:

I am looking at a 2005 28' International CCD with a DW of 5460 and a GVWR of 7300. Find out if I get it next Tuesday

For a tow vehicle, I am seriously considering a 2010 Ford Expedition EL 4x2 with a 5.4L V8, 3.73 axle ratio, factory trailer sway control, factory heavy duty trailer package, and factory load leveling suspension, wheelbase of 131". Horespower 310 @ 5100 rpm. Torque 265 @ 3600 rpm. 33.5 gallon tank. It seems to me that this falls nicely somewhere between the ratings of a Suburban 1500 and 2500, and I need an SUV for daily driving.

Gonna buy an Equalizer for my weight distributing hitch. The specs say the Expedition EL will tow 8900 pounds and has a GVWR of 7474. The GCWR is rated 15,000. Tongue load of 890.

Would you buy this Tow Vehicle for the 28' Airstream International CCD? If so, why? If not, why and what would you get instead?

Thanks for any thoughts you can give me!

hi pinky, hope the trailer works out.

i am in the NOT camp and here's just a bit o'why.

ALL of the numbers u have referenced are useful, but need clarification.

for example the towing capacity is reduced by people, gear and STUFF in the suv.

subtract pound4pound.

find/post the suvz PAYLOAD, i'll assume it's ~1500 lbs for now.

the a/s tongue wt is only an estimate, doesn't include 60 lbs of lp gas OR a spare tire...

or any options installed ON/near the trailer nose.

so lets round it UP to 950 lbs and add a 50 lb hitch.

at 1000 lbs that leaves 500 lbs for people, gear, toys, fuel IN THE SUV (1500-1000)...

so a family of 4 or 2 hefty people and stuff...

or 1 human and a pack o'dogs...

will be OVER the gvwr for the suv.

((all of that would be TRUE for many burbons too))
___________

the point is u need to explore these numbers a bit closer since the CAPacity of the suv in marginal.

can it work? sure.

do you wanna be AT THE LIMITS for each rating? U decide.
___________

in contrast a 2010 f150 CREW CAB with the same basic driveline will have MORE towing and payload capacity.

with plenty of room STILL for 4-5 humans.

((add a tonneau or shell for gear))

i also don't like carrying gensets, camping stoves or other misc rv necessities...

in the SAME SPACE as people, as the STUFF may stink and move around while driving.
___________

examine your rv plans, do they include MOSTLY short trips to local parks...

or LONG voyages over hill and dale?
___________

and another important issue is trailer size.

will the 27 be the LONGEST stream u buy?

many/most folks upsize so buy a tow vehicle capable of ONE or TWO sizes bigger...

a 27 is right at the junction where long debates about 1/2 vs 3/4 ton vehicles happens...

with diesel EURO suvs in that mix too.
___________

on EDIT, you've posted basically the same question in multiple threads...

this does little to get answers and only BUMPS them against each other...

while moving other ONE TIME posted stuff OFF the front page.

be patient, it's friday night.

folks will offer up answers in dOOOtime...

cheers

Thanks for all the info - and the tips on the threads. This is my first foray into forums AND Airstreams - just not sure how to do it all right yet

I can't do a truck to tow the 28' Airstream - need the SUV for work and dog and people moving the rest of the time.

I will call the dealership tomorrow to find the answer to the payload question, for sure.

Would the shorter wheelbase Expedition with a tow capacity of 9200 be enough of a jump up (depending on the payload)??

Or do I need to get away from the Expedition totally and go with a 2500 Suburban?

I plan to head to the mountains as much as I can - and don't want to limit myself.

What are the top couple of SUVs you would consider?

Thanks so much for all the help - REALLY appreciate it! Pinky

Forgot to mention - the 28' is top of my range on what I think I will ever want to buy/tow. It's the layout I need for fun and to use the Airstream for work purposes too - so don't think I'll need to go bigger.

a texan that "can't do a truck" is that even possible?

all of the large suvs will have the same issues, good or bad,

and about the same specs, capacities and ratings...

trailer life puts out a COMPLETE listing of every tow vehicle and specs annually.

it's online and u can scan vehicles quickly.

a FULL SIZE VAN (e250/350, 2500/3500) is another "enclosed option"...

the van will have MORE payload capacity and as good or better towing capacity...

they aren't as finished inside as an suv but 3 rows of seating is easy to do, as are dogs.

they also don't typically offer 4x4 IF that's needed for a texan.

lots of folks have and tow with suvs and love them...

no doubt they'll post up some info (it's already there is a LOT of threads)

or start reading in the tv section, the options are discussed often.

cheers

I am towing with an '06 Expedition 4x4. It has about the same specs. as you have outlined. Fully loaded for towing with a full tank, 2 passengers and tools, chairs, generator, Equilizer hitch, etc. it weighs in at 6400lbs., well within the GVWR. We live in NW US and must go over mountains to get anywhere. We have towed about 15,000 miles to date. Absolutley no problems. My only wish would be for a larger gas tank.
