MPG's with Diesel

2016 F250 diesel, leveled, fiberglass topper, 35 inch tires and I get 12.5-14 towing our FC25. Truck weighs a tad under 9k. 17-18 empty on highway.

I generally get 14 to 15 towing on flat ground. Several years ago coming home from the west the overhead read 17 plus all day. The fuel gauge verified that it was correct. When I finally stopped for fuel the wind whipped the door out of my hand and almost blew me over. I got 17.5 hand calculated. A 40 mph tailwind for most of the day is a big help.

My ram 6.7 diesel gets around 13 not towing, 11-12 towing. Gets driven about 1500 miles per year or less. If it got 8, I’d still love it.

Thanks Hans...I'm guessing limited slip? More questions if you don't mind; are you running 285 60R20 tires? At what pressure? Door decal calls for 65PSI, but tire embossed with (cold) rating of 80psi...

Also, do you use any fuel treatment (Cetane boost, or for lubricity?) Do you have the OEM air filter, in place - no K&N or anything like that?

Our 2500 Cummins Ram gets about 10-15% improved MPG over the Hemi it replaced last summer. We traded for it on a Saturday and left for Arizona on the following Monday. While the improvement in MPG was appreciated the most pleasant outcome was the improvement in ride and performance of the 3/4 ton versus the previous Ram 1500. As others have posted you can pull your AS with anything but it is hard to improve on the benefits a larger TV. I track fuel consumption and cost per mile using Fuelly.com.

Yes it is limited slip. And I do have the 285 60R20 tires. They are big suckers. I've tried adjusting the tire pressure up and down to determine the effect on ride comfort. But it seems like the recommended 65 psi is about right and I keep it there.

I've made no mods to anything on the truck and I have not added any additives to the fuel.

BTW, when not towing, I've gotten as high as 21.2 mpg (manually calculated) on a 561 mile trip at about 60 to 62 mph. And it only had about 2,000 miles on the clock then. Not bad for a 8160# vehicle. Stop and go bites into the mpg's pretty hard.

I really like this truck. It's towing capability is awesome and it is so comfortable, refined and quiet.

I'm still working out a new hitch (Class V) and probably WD even though we towed a Featherlight two horse/dressing room tandom axle trailer safe and solid on the ball with air lift. I'm looking at the new Weigh Safe CNC machined hitch...once they are available...to work with the auto air lift rear-suspension we opted for this time. We plan to connect with old AS friends in New Mexico in the early spring and tour the west. I believe you mentioned coming down to Florida...not sure where but if near St Pete, we have plenty of tools and hot coffee (retired Navy family) should the need arise.

We do; have always had GMCs but wanted the turbo-Cummins, exhaust brake and air lift - so bit on the 2500 Laramie crew cab 4X4...so far I'm very impressed. What a tight, comfortable and well equipped vehicle. Added a Retrax lockable aluminum retractable bed cover with a removable rail system for mounting a Yakima cargo box occasionally. The only other mods are a rubber bed mat and Ram/Mopar rear mud flaps to keep the (hopefully) the dings off the SS guards on the AS. Lots of tech though, so bought an extended warranty for the first time in my life...and staying away from bio-diesel!

I’m new to an Airstream and tow vehicle (recently moved from a DP). We get 12-13 mpg with our 2020 HD Denali towing a Classic 33 and sitting on 67-68 mph.

on our 3rd Power Stroke, and our winter travels have us covering 8000+ miles the overwhelming majority is pulling our Classic. The ave has always been less the 12.5 mpg for the entire trip. Winter fuel, #2 diesel, kills mileage, but once we can fuel with #1 mileage goes up along with performance. Our summer travels our mileage increases, but not that much, upper 12's average. We just started our annual winter trek, and lucky to get over 10 mpg fighting a predominant headwind and burning winter blend. As we turn to the west, with the better fuel the mpg will increase to the mid low 13's, although it's still common to face some headwinds and of course some "hills". On nice roads we are comfortable pulling a little harder than some here, so faster is more fuel. We use the truck's calculation of mpg, but have found doing the math we are doing a little better. We've had good luck and great service with our Fords, and will be driving a new #4 next year, with the exact same equipment, with deciding on the color being the biggest decision

I have a 2019 RAM 2500 with the Cummins diesel with about 4000 miles on it. We are on our way to FL from PA traveling I-95. Yesterday, driving in relatively flat NC and SC, I got 14.8 mpg driving at 65 mph and towing the AS. This was calculated manually, 302 miles divided by 20.4 gallons (the onboard computer is always more optimistic).



That's the best mpg's I've ever obtained and just wanted to share. And it made me curious about the best mpg's you've achieved when towing with a diesel TV?

Towed our 27 ft Globetrotter 500 miles roundtrip to Moab UT from SLC Area and got 14.5 mpg. TV is a 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0 liter. Got similar mileage towing to southern Idaho too.

I have a 2017 F250 King Ranch 6.7L, 4x4; I carry generator, camp gear, grills, and "stuff" in the bed all the time...just wife and i when towing our 28' AS. I get 13-13.3 mpg towing 65mph avg. I get 16.5-17.8 mpg when not towing, at 70-75mph...I have 76K miles on her now..so far, no death wobble and no other issues...great TV. I do have the 100K warranty also, but have not had to use. I think all 3 major MFG.s are doing a good job now with the 3/4T offerings...
