Anything from 27-mph on up for an average is good so far as keeping idle time to a minimum. Engine life is predicated on a higher than 30-mph average when one reads about the subject, called MTBO, L10 or B50 (Ford and GM diesels at about 225k and Dodge at 385k at present.)

I've put about 11000 miles on this truck since I bought it, the rest was from two previous owners.

On a couple of the truck forums that I'm on, they rate used trucks based upon their average mph. The higher the mph, the better, indicating a majority of highway driving.
Over 40 mph - excellent
30 to 40 mph - good
20 to 30 mph - fair
Under 20 mph - junk
This, of course, is not the only rating factor, but gives some insight into how the truck was used by its prior owner(s).

Heavy amounts of idle are a real killer. As are short trips (under fifty miles). Both drastically shorten the life of the engine versus its potential.
Getting a 30-mph Average is more difficult than it appears.

You can check idle hours on some of them. That would be what I looked at when buying used.

Also today, 45039 miles; 1149 engine hours; 39.2 mph. But we use our truck for local touring once we reach a destination.

You have me beat - 208888 5007.4 hrs AVG 41.42 mph - and 2002 still likes like it did when I drove it out of the showroom - trying to decide I keep it :-)

Ack too late to edit. Thats a 52 mph average. Lots of cruise on 65 350 plus mile blocks.
