Maiden voyage with 19ft AS and Touareg TDI
We made our maiden voyage from Raleigh to Asheville towing our 2010 19ft AS (Victorinox) this past weekend. I had asked a lot of question on this thread before deciding on the right vehicle and hitch. We used a Lift-Eaz Recurve R3 for the WDH which has an anti-sway built in. I also had to install a brake controller to the Touareg (Tekonsha Primus IQ), which I did myself once I found the right connectors. The WDH I had to install in on site picking up the AS, so Iím grateful for YouTube videos all around.
The first tow from the lot to the campground where we stayed The night was about 30 miles. It was enough to know I needed to make adjustments. Also turns out I didnít have the WDH arm installed right. I lowered the ball a bit and re-installed the WDH arms. From there, the 4 hour tow home was better than I could have expected. The Touareg TDI was a champ. No straining, handled the AS well, and worked nicely with the brake controller. One connected to the AS, the Touareg knew it had a trailer and monitored the connection (we found out a brake light had a poor connection). Speed was good (up to 65), no swaying at all), and it climbed Old Fort Mtn on I-40 well.
Thanks everyone for the helpful information. It was a trial by fire to tow it across NC to get it home. I learned a lot. Now the fun begins.
